Need a new Dogi

Hi all.

It's been awhile since I posted here so... I am a little out of the loop.

I took a look at my dogi the other day and noticed that it is getting a little rough. I purchased a dogi from BuJin about 6 or 7 years ago... (if not longer) and I think it's time to start looking for a replacement. I am really looking for something that will last me another 6 or 7 years. Any recommendations? I am willing to spend a little extra for a nice dogi that will last me for a long time!

Thanks in advance!

-Kevin

Re: Need a new Dogi

Thanks for this question!

A number of years ago, I found a great judo gi made by a company called Ronin. But I can't seem to find them anywhere. Another brand I absolutely love is Lion, but the only place I've found them is in Honda Martial Arts Supplies in NYC (54 W 39th St). But they don't have a web site (except for a Facebook page).

I'll be watching this thread for updates...

Re: Need a new Dogi

6 or 7 years seems to be a reasonable lifespan for most judo-gis. I find that after about 6 years, they are still wearable, but they start to fray a bit.

Anyway, I just bought a "Miyabi" keiko-gi from Iwata, and I love it. It's really soft, and it's a lot lighter than most other gis I have owned. I have no idea about how durable it is though.

I buy Biesu dogi from Kiota Budo Company in Maryland. Very heavy weight and wear like iron, yet very comfortable. Mine have been lasting well over six years before getting retired. They have a toll-free line at 800-783-2322. With shipping, they run right around $ 225.00. The best I've ever owned.

My friend, Tony, tells me that Ronin brand is available from kinjisan.com.

Re: Need a new Dogi

i liked these http://www.ninecirclesusa.com/Clothi...ed_Canvas.aspx

i have tried a bunch of gi, but like the above the best, besides the old bujin, so far. good and cheap. can't ask for more than that. i liked that it has half size. now if they would put zipper and velcro into the gi pants, then i would be even more happy.

I like most of the stuff from Tozando. Their basic Aikido gi does the trick for me and their service is great. However due to the yen going up to such a high exchange rate it's too expensive for me right now.

Re: Need a new Dogi

I have the Shogun silver plus, it's durable enough but fraying a little already and the skirt part of the jacket is a nightmare to iron.

Next time I'm going with the ninecircles one Phi has linked to, I've got my weapons and belts from them and they give good service.

I bought their KS200 about 7 weeks ago. Very good quality and service. Size 5 was a perfect fit for 6'0" tall and 185lbs frame.

They are priced about the same for their products as Tozando, who I normally by from.

Re: Need a new Dogi

Ok, so all of these look like really good choices, and I like the idea of a gi that will last that long. Mine are pretty cheap and last for about 3 years or so. My only question is are there any stores that will sell a split size? I need a size larger pants than my top.

Thanks!

Not a half size, but a different size. The matching size top for my pants gaps open too much in the front, which would be fine for a man, but it's not exactly appropriate for a woman, in my opinion.

Re: Need a new Dogi

Kiyota Co. in MD will let you order either a top or bottom separately. So you can mix and match sizes. You will pay a small premium.

I just bought a split size gi for my dad from Iwata. They had no problem giving him a bigger top and smaller pants.

at aikido24 (the new bujin), you can order the gi top and bottom separately with different size. Haven't try that yet meself.
