Update

I know that my last post sounded a little negative, but since then, I've found that the decisions to just see the head of the dojo as another sempai and to be more self-centered in my training have really been a positive change. The next day, I had a really good conversation with the head of the dojo, and I feel like my relationship with him had suddenly improved. I've also felt an improvement with another sometimes-difficult member of the dojo (a stiff, muscle-bound wrist-cranker who I had a good conversation with a few nights ago), and in general things are improving.

The angry guy hasn't been around much in the past few weeks. I don't know when he'll be back, or how long he'll practice until his next spell of non-training. We'll see how that goes. It's a small enough dojo that not interacting with him is really quite awkward.

I am still thinking about opening another dojo at some point, and this crisis has really focused my thinking about what's important in a dojo.

I'm also still thinking about moving away at some point, for a while, to train at a better dojo.

Re: Anger on the mat

Well, that is good that things are working out, but don't expect it to always be that way.

There has to be a general set of rules which everyone on the mat will enforce by their presence to surround and isolate violence and anger so those showing uncontrolled outbursts or bad behavior can confront that behavior, to work through it, or they must leave the training area.

No ifs ... no ands .. no buts .. anger and its manifestations are not unnatural, but we do try to address those behaviors in a manner that is CONSTRUCTIVE, and not in a manner that is destructive.

If there is a need to address the underlying causes before class, or after class ... then do so, but don't bring it to class and ignore it to the point it affects the entire class. I believe, the entire class has to affect the control of behavior that gets out of hand so that presence is overwhelming to the point that isolation and confronting the causes of bad behavior becomes the only logical choice when it rears its ugly head.

TAKE IT OFF THE MAT! Deal with it.

None of us is perfect. Life is one long everlasting learning experience.
