Gozo Shidoa video clip
http://www.ecbudokai.com/Media/Vide...%20Taijutsu.WMV
the creator of yoshinkan aikido!
nice clip not in these video clip's he was in his late 70's
even as a sick and dying man he was still mighty strong and powerfull...many considered gozo shioda ueshiba's best student.

Re: Gozo Shidoa video clip
The clip amongst all the rest was a nice treat to watch, however flicking through the web pages of this site what caught my eye the most was the insructors teaching philosophy, and if I may quote:
"Do not speak of me as someone who has taught you how to fight. Every man who is always scared seeks and sees only that. Give a coward effective techniques and you'll create a braggart who challenges everyone to prove himself, and has little respect for others. Give a great man a great art, and you will create a quiet and gentle man, who appreciates life and respects it."
If anything that is what true budo should be.
Thank you for posting this site.
Osu!

Re: Gozo Shidoa video clip
Sounds like a great club. Couldn't find the clip; not sure if Shioda is the best student of Ueshiba (could be, I don't know), but I think he is the best writer on aikido.

Go to the photo/ video gallery and then scroll down the page. There's a video clip titled "Kancho in action"

Re: Gozo Shidoa video clip
There are 3 different ukes. The clip is fuzzy but I believe the 2nd and 3rd uke's are Ando Sensei and Nagano Sensei, both honbu dojo instructors at the time. The first I can't recall. I believe his name was Ito.
Maybe Michael Stumpel or anyone else can id the ukes.

Re: Gozo Shidoa video clip
Hi Steven,
The first uke (bokken) looks like Itoh Sensei to me, too...but depending on when this clip was taken the timeframe might be wrong. Second uke (jo) definately Ando Sensei and I think the 3rd one (tanto) is Nakano Sensei.
Of course...I reserve the right to be completely wrong
cheers,

Re: Gozo Shidoa video clip
So I got them right with the wrong spellings. Figures.
I also get Nagano and Nakano mixed up. But I agree with your confirmation.

Re: Gozo Shidoa video clip
Hi there.
This is my first post on aiki web.I am a Japanese and was a member of a university aikido club back in the late 80s.
I consider myself lucky that I had several chance to attend the black belt seminars under shioda sensei and to be directly exposed to his techniques.
The Video was shot in the 80s, and the uke for the sword is not Ito sensei, it is Sakurai sensei, then the youngest shihan of Yoshinkan.
He left Yoshinkan in the end of 1990 and created his own organization.
Sakurai sensei was a very good Aikidoka, I had great experiences training with him.
sorry for my bad english.

Re: Gozo Shidoa video clip
Thanks Bryan
Thanks for your warm hearted post.
I am really amazed what is going on aiki web forums and on aikido journal forum.
Now, I think I realy understand when Mr. Stanley Pranin says that the next important movement in the aikido world will happen outside Japan.
Sadly, there is (still) no open forums which can discuss aikido issues regardless of schools in Japan.
Aiki web and Aikido journal forums are real treasure for the next generations of aikido (including me) and I'm happy to be the part of it .

Re: Gozo Shidoa video clip
Hi Tom .. Thanks for the clarification on the first uke. That was the person I was thinking of, but thought the name was Itoh. I've seen many pictures of him and was told he had left the Yoshinkan after Shioda Kancho's passing.
Welcome to the forum.

Yawata San,
Welcome, and please continue to post and share with us. Your experience and perspectives are very much needed as we try to pass the aikido we learn on to others.
Best wishes,
Ron

Re: Gozo Shidoa video clip
Hi Yawata-san,
Thanks for clearing that up. I thought it looked like Itoh Sensei, but the whole timeframe seemed wrong. It looks like Sakurai Sensei left the hombu just before I got there, so I have never met him
Apologies for the mistake...
Osu,

Re: Gozo Shidoa video clip
Yes, that is Fumio Sakurai sensei. It is my website you all are looking at. Sorry about the fuzziness, but I captured the video from an analog videotape via my computer. However, I still think it captures the essence of Kancho sensei's skill and technique. Thank you for the kind words regarding the site, by the way. OSU!

Re: Gozo Shioda video clip
Hi Stuempel san, Tisdale san,Stuart san and Miranda san.
Osu Gary sensei.
Indeed Sakurai sensei left the Yoshinkan in 1990 or in the early spring of 1991.
He created his new organization "Aikodo SA" which includes sparring and competition.
I think that his leave was a kind of shock for Kancho sensei.
After his leave ,on occasion, I remember Shioda sensei stating something like that " Aikido as a martial art will end with me" and also " whether sparring and competition should be included is a question for the younger generation.I am too old to think about that"
Hearing this speach, I felt somewhat sad.
That was 2 or 3 years before he passed away.

Re: Gozo Shidoa video clip
To get to the longer video clip, take the "About Aikido" link, click on yoshinkan, then click on the picture of Shioda shihan. It is worth the effort.
Cheers,
Paul
P.S. Welcome Yawata san, and thanks for the insight
