Peter,

Thank you for a wonderful article. I look forward to part two. I love reading in particular the part on "Some points of interest".

Re: Article: An Aikido Journey: Part 1 by Peter Goldsbury

To paraphrase a conversation I heard in England:

:circle "You know the IAF Chair is English right?"
:square "You're kidding! Who?"
:circle "That professor off aikiweb; he lives in Hiroshima..."
:square "Didn't we nuke Hiroshima?"
:circle "Guess not...maybe they rebuilt it."
:square "Cool."

Interesting stuff, I particularly liked the article's emphasis on historical and political context. Aikido is often presented as if it sprung into being from nowhere, and continues to exist in a vacuum.

Thanks Peter! Nice article, and I look forward to the next one. Timely too...nice example of Budo as opposed to fighting arts...

Best,
Ron

Dear Peter,

Thank you for an interesting series of articles. I have one question to the first part regarding your teacher at the university. Is there a particular reason you did not mention his name or could you tell us who he is? Is he still teaching aikido somewhere? I found it a little peculiar that you never mention his name since you are naming most other teachers (Yamada sensei, Chiba sensei, Kanai sensei, Kanetsuka sensei etc.). I would be interested to know more about him if you'd care to tell us.

Best regards

Erik

Hello Erik,

Thank you for your mail.

There was no particular reason for not mentioning his name. He was never an established shihan, like the others. He had been a member of the Tokyo University Aikido Club. His name is Norio Tao and he trained/trains at the Shiseikan with Minoru Inaba Shihan. I suspect that few in this discussion forum will have heard of him..

Thank you for your reply Peter.

You are right, I have never heard about him, but I have met and practiced with Inaba shihan at Shiseikan, so it is interesting to learn about his background still.
I am looking forward to subsequent parts of your aikido journey if there are still more to come.

Best regards,

Erik

Hello Erik,

I plan to write ten installments in all, including some extensive discussion of the pros and cons of living and training in Japan.

After which I will write about 'issues', much in the way that George Ledyard does in his columns. Actually, I agree with George on so many issues that it will perhaps be difficult to avoid repeating what he has written. But we will see.

I am afraid that other commitments will prevent an installment for March, but I hope to resume in April.

Best wishes,

P A Goldsbury

Re: Article: An Aikido Journey: Part 1 by Peter Goldsbury

Dear Mr Goldsbury,
Thank you for your writings.
I came across your set of articles recently and was interested in something you wrote in the very first piece.

You mentioned in that article that you were at Sussex University and that you practiced with Japanese instructor, and that initially it was a friend who introduced aikido to you. And also,

'Since we would graduate and leave the club in any case, I think this was not a problem for us. As it happened, only two of us, out of the original group, continued aikido training after graduation.'

Was the other person who continued with Aikido after graduation, John Czarnuszewicz by any chance?

He was my sensei at Bristol from Oct 99 to Apr 03, when he passed away unexpectedly.

Thank you

Best regards

Derrick
