personally I tend to prefer the aiki-urukai style of aikido.
Phil,

Never heard of aiki-urukai but would be interested in learning more. Does the style/organization/dojo have a website? I tried a quick google but didn't turn up anything.

aiki urukai comme from the Uruk Hai in LOTR.
It denotes an aikido partictioner whose moto could be:
make it work before making it flow

That being said we have all have the withe hand of foster sensei on our forehead.

Hahaha!

ok so is there also an Aiki-Sindar or Aiki-Quen? Because I'd far prefer the Elvish Styles myself. Uruk is just far to brutish for my sense of refinement I prefer something more subtle.

All these style names confuse this poor beginner. I believe I am told my Dojo does the Yoshinkan. My friend, I think, does Yoseikan.... I could not begin to tell you the difference. But if there is a resource to give understanding on this that does not require joining yet another message board please point me at it.

So far I am given to understand that each one who practices the art brings his own flavor to it and thus style. So I would suspect that as suggested simply visiting another Dojo might offer up some new ideas for you.

Okay, I have just envisioned the Battle of Gondor aikido-style... Aragorn Sensei in a hakama, applying kotegaeshi to the Witch-king of Angmar...

Gimli, an experienced nidan in a chain-mail gi, uses his low center of gravity to unbalance opponents and throw them with shihonage...

And in the background, the always-inspiring presence of Gandalf Shihan, who defeats his enemies with no-contact kokyunage from a distance of 100 yards...

Now this was funny! Ok, I'll revert to Flintstone Ryu since I believe it's older than Aiki-Urukai ...

I believe that would have been the little incident between Gandalf and Sauruman in their little tug o war with Theoden at Edoras... Gandalf delivered some fine Ukemi when he tossed Saurman out. OTOH Grima's Forward Ukemi on the steps outside...(See Extended version of Two Towers) left a bit to be desired.

One would need to consult the Quenta Aikimarillion in order to determine the origin of the many and varied Styles of Middle Earth Aikido.

The Music of the Uchi-Deshi

There was Ueshiba, the One, who in Aiki-world is called O'Sensei; and he made first the Uchi-Deshi, the Holy Ones, that were the offspring of his thought, and they were with him before aught else was made. And he spoke to them, propounding to them themes of Ki extension; and they trained before him, and he was glad. But for a long while they trained only each alone, or but a few together, while the rest watched; for each comprehended only that part of the mind of the O'Sensei from which he came, and in the understanding of their brethren they grew but slowly. Yet ever as they trained they came to deeper understanding of budo, and increased in unison and harmony."

Tell me that J.R.R. Tolkien was not secretly an aikidoka

...which of course leaves out any details of the poor hobbits. Hobbits, you'll recall, are constantly cited as having great stores of internal strength! I smell a cover-up...

Well, I certainly am....
.but that rake should be left alone, it is not one of the" THREE ALLOWED WEAPONS" (can you hear the reverb?)

Now the Smeagol/Szes..Szexzip...unpronouncable- one correlation.

I think we lost it completely the moment we started discussing aiki-urukai

Re: Aikido and the Lord of the Rings

Not I.

My username is Shadowfax
My dogs names are Merri and Pippin
Pippin knows a number of tricks with Elvish voice commands...
I have my name transliterated into tengwar (elvish writing) on the side of my car....

You mean to tel me that's not normal?

Aiki-urakai just made total sense to me.

And how about that Randori Gandalf had at Minas Tirith?

Re: Aikido and the Lord of the Rings

Or how Luthien impressed Beren with her hip throws? And how Beren lost his hand to Morgoth's fierce kotegaeshi?

And how Frodo skillfully took Gollum's center at the Crack of Doom and made him fall into the abyss?

And how Eowyn defeated the Ringwraith with a well-aimed tsuki strike from her katana?

Okay, maybe I need to stop

haha - love this thread.
I personally think that all along Denethor was just disappointed that Faramir did not test for Sandan, unlike his brother...

I wonder how often they threw seminars at Imladris?

yes that was irimi nage, entering deeply to the rear is quite fitting to take the center of the Crack of Doom.

You mean except Elrond's Aiki Expo they organized in the first book? Probably not often, but I hear members of the Imladris section traveled often to Lothlorien dojo to train under Galadriel, one of the few female shihans.

I think you're right about Denethor

Re: Aikido and the Lord of the Rings

Maybe we should ask this guy...
http://artofcombat.org/Convention/BioTW.htm

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Wolf and taking his Bartitsu class at ISMAC in Detroit over Memorial Day weekend. He struck me as a very capable and insightful instructor. It is also interesting to learn of Barton-Wright and the foundation of Bartitsu, as it was one of the first attempts in the West to cross-train in Eastern and Western martial arts.
