Shindai Aikikai, Orlando, Florida, is excited to announce the return of Ellis Amdur sensei.
Ellis Amdur is a licensed instructor in two koryu (classical Japanese martial traditions), the Araki Ryu and the Toda-ha Buko Ryu. He has practiced aikido for approximately 30 years, thirteen of them in Japan. He studied most intensely with Terry Dobson, Yoshio Kuroiwa and Yasunori Kuwamori. He serves as technical advisor to the Itten Dojo in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, revamping their aikido curriculum. His research, over the past several years, has focused on making his aikido as seamless as possible, merging atemi and counters into all techniques.
Amdur was a contributing editor of Aikido Journal, and his work continues to appear in a number of internationally recognized aikido publications. His articles on the subtle integration of martial arts in ordinary life were published in book form: Dueling with Osensei: Grappling with the Myth of the Warrior-Sage. He is also the author of Old School: Essays on Japanese Martial Traditions. His straight-forward step-by-step approach to learning and teaching safe, but highly functional, aikido ukemi was recently made available on DVD: Ukemi From the Ground Up.
Ellis Amdur currently resides in Seattle, Washington. Through his company, Edgework, he provides various crisis intervention services and consultation for people and organizations facing dangerous people. He also offers training to law enforcement agencies in hostage negotiation.
