Do you think your aikido dojo would survive for a year if its chief instructor passed away tomorrow? Here are the current results.

still in your heart
Just put his picture up next to O-Sensei and imagine that he's still there instructing you.

No way! But this is a special case. It is my teacher's "experiment dojo" with small classes practising at odd hours. Nobody else teaches there. If he's away on holiday on teaching a seminar, there's no class... He also has a big dojo together with a few other teachers. That one would survive without him.

Our whole dojo system is built around making the dojo self sustaining.

Yes.
Sadly this happened to us just over three years ago and we are still here. It knocked us for six, of course!

This is a frightening question... To consider what happens when the inevitable happens... at this point in my life I am only concerned out of getting the most out of the moments I do have with my sensei... and if he does pass away, then the best I can do is hope that the dojo would sustain itself.
I know I will keep training, and I hope I am not the only one. I will just keep going to class in the meantime.

Everyone who answers in the thread says "yes", but 15 % (so far) vote "no". I would guess that these are the ones who practise in a rather small dojo, where there are not several senior students who could take over.

Most assuredly. There would be a job opening though for a new "court jester."

I think it would probably survive but in a very different incarnation.
I've always thought that the dojo (or style) should have a definite plan laid out in case this should happen. Like having a will for you family.
I think too often people don't want to think about it and it never gets dealt with when we are of healthy mind and body and able to make rational decisions.

Hi
I agree with "the plan" (sounds like a movie). YOu can always change the plan, but it helps everbody to know in which direction to move/work.
Concerning the quesiton asked; no, the dojo will stand, it just might change direction.

This is a very pertinant question for me. Not that I'm going to die, but because I'm a research scientist and therefore tend to have short term contracts. If I have to leave here the next grade down is a 4th kyu since the club has not been running long. The nearest club is 1 1/2 hrs away.

I think it would stop. Working on getting my Ikkyu to Shodan, which would help the survival rate.

Perhaps, but I've heard some good reports about a certain seminar at the Yobushin Dojo near Bloomington, Indiana.

It is not practice that makes perfect, it is correct practice that makes perfect.
