Is there a 'Ki Aikido' technique book?
I recently read an interview with Koichi Tohei, and aside from being surprised at what he said his style of aikido is, he said that he only kept about 30% of Morihei Ueshiba's aikido techniques, creating the rest himself.
This being so, i'm very much intrigued, and would like to see them, so does anybody know if there's a 'Ki Aikido' technique book?
Much obliged.

Re: Is there a 'Ki Aikido' technique book?
Tohei Sensei has authored many books over the years, and some of his senior students have done so, as well. Much of the info is similar, and more like re-edited versions of the same material, so you can get the basic "flavor" from most any of them. Just search the web for aikido books with "ki" somewhere in the title, or for those directly authored by Tohei Sensei himself (there are about a dozen in this category). If you expect to learn ki development from a book, however, you will be disappointed. It is something that can only be learned firsthand, and a Ki-no-Kenkyukai school would be a good place to start.

Re: Is there a 'Ki Aikido' technique book?
"This is Aikido" by Tohei - out of print
"Aikido and Ki" Kiratoshi Murayama
But Clark is right - the books of techniques will not do justice to Tohei's Aikido. Unfortunately there is not a lot of video on Tohei, but it is worth pursuing. I believe the Aikido Journal has recently posted a short clip.
To me, his Aikido was much more fluid and movement based than others - hence seeing it through a movie, and not just snapshots.

FWIW, there is a nice collection of Tohei videos on youtube. Just search for Tohei, and especially look for the 5 part "The founder of shin shin toitsu Aikido" series because they're about ten minutes apiece and have a lot of good footage of technique, ki tests, and aiki taiso.

Not nit-picking, Larry, but it's actually "Aikido with Ki", by Koretoshi Maruyama... The correct spellings will aid any searches.
Also, Tohei has done an extensive series of videos under the Ki Society banner, but they are available only through the Ki Society, and cost about $2000USD!

I got a book from Ki No Kenkyukai in Japan written by Tohei Sensei himself entitled The Way to Union with Ki, Aikido with Mind and Body Coordinated. it is so far the most complete of his works and touches on everything else he has mentioned in his other books that are available publicly. However this book also illustrates in great detail the techniques of Ki Aikido including Jo and Bokken katas as Tohei Sensei himself would teach it. Unfortunately, it is not for sale to the general public. I have been told that there are only 200 copies in english available worldwide.

Re: Is there a 'Ki Aikido' technique book?
Tohei did publish a large hardcover technique book - it had a blue cover with Tohei on the front. Not at the house to check the title.
Aikido with Ki??
Appreciate the 'assist' Clark.
Also Stan Pranin at the Aikido Journal has just put out a video of Tohei taken in 1974 as Tohei toured the U.S. I believe the footage was filmed in San Francisco.....maybe better than a book! Well worth a look for Ki Society people - both current and former.A lot less than $2,000!

Re: Is there a 'Ki Aikido' technique book?
Apart from Tohei Koichi books (What is Aikido, This is Aikido, and the books available to members of Ki Society), a few books have been published in the last few years, by Ki aikido teachers:
-"Ki Aikido: A Journey into the Self " (general book on ki aikido) & a Student handbook from the australian club "North Side Aikido"
-"Ki, le chemin de l'éveil" (in french) from sensei Jean-Rock Fortin (canadian ki aikido sensei)
Some will use "ki" as an abstract concept (mental image, easy to use to practice), some as an entity, fundamental building block of the universe (or jedi force ??).
You might enjoy reading this book on "ki" to understand the origin of the word in japanese: "The Mysterious Power of Ki: The Force Within" by Kouzu Kaku
(to "develop ki" was to "develop your body", "become healthy", ... )
(you can find "ki" at the heart of many words for health, energy, will, air, ... too )
