Not that I know of, I live near Manassas but I don't know of any Aikido dojos around that area. There might be one in Woodbridge though, which is about 30 minutes away.

Re: Aikido in Manassas,Va.?

I attend the Dale City Aikikai dojo which falls under Sakamoto Sensei direction. You can look at our website at http://www.dalecityaikikai.org/. Just as a note, the recreation center will be closed this coming Monday. There is also a dojo in Winchester that is under his direction as well. You can contact them at using the following link: http://www.capitalaikikai.org/affiliates.html

Using the AikiWeb Dojo search, here's what I found within 25 miles of Manassas. Given commute times around the metro area, your friend's choice may be determined in large part by where he works.

As for your other question, our dojo's official summaryof the art follows:

Aikido is a Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba, who is often referred to by his title, 'O-Sensei' ('Great Teacher'). On a purely physical level, aikido technique involves throws and joint controls that are derived from traditional sword and spear arts. Aikido focuses not on striking opponents, but rather on using the force of an attack to redirect the attacker's movement or position relative to the defender. Aikido practice is not static, but instead places great emphasis on position and the dynamics of movement.

Aikido may be translated as the the way of harmony of spirit. O-Sensei emphasized that the study of aikido was a moral and spiritual discipline as well as a physical one, and he placed great weight on the development of a noble and peaceful character. While aikido (like any other martial art) offers the practitioner the immediate opportunity to study self-defense technique and improve his or her physical health, in the long term aikido offers spiritual discipline and peace of mind. Although the idea of a martial discipline striving for peace and harmony may seem paradoxical, it is the most basic tenet of the art.

Thumbs down Re: Aikido in Manassas,Va.?

Thanx for the info. That's more then I found . I kinda understand what your saying,my friend told me one of the cool ,realistic things of aikido is that you have a choice if attacked. One, you can thrash the person or two control them and still prevent personal harm.karate for example, it would be difficult to kick someone in the head, not hurt them and still protect yourself.I don't know,I've only seen my friend in vidio's,in person he doesn't show me because he says I don't know how to fall safely and get up????Thanx again

Re: Aikido in Manassas,Va.?

Aikido, just like life, is all about being in the right place at the right time.

keep in mind that when you're in a position to control, you're necessarily in a position to strike or harm.

that's a *little* different from characterizing it as a choice between one of two options in that the proper time/place to strike may not be condusive to controlling.

but the reverse will always be true and given my troglodyte tendencies, I've always found beauty in the *choice* that Aikido gives me.
