"Do" in Aikido as a set of intructions
I think the "Do" in Aikido really means "instructions". The same type of instructions that comes with your kids Christmas or birthday toys.
O'Sensei left us basic instructions on how to fit appropriately with our opponent or training partner ( aiki for the body), how to coordinate our mind and bodies (aiki for the mind) and how to become one with the universal spirit,Tao, God, etc (aiki for the spirit). The same set of instructions is used to achieve to all three.
If you don't follow the instructions the toys won't work correctly, unless there was divine intervention.
If you don't follow the instructions your Aikido won't work correctly, unless there was divine intervention.
If your child is young enough they won't know that the toy is incorrectly assembled and play with it anyway, although they may get laughed at for having the steering handle of their bike behind the seat.
Dittos for Aikido.
Any modification to the basic instructions should be made after assembly is complete.

Re: "Do" in Aikido as a set of intructions
Instruction tells us how to put the pieces together; the Do tells us how to play with others nicely.

Re: "Do" in Aikido as a set of intructions
Jutsu is more "instructions"
Do would, to me, indicate more "uses"

Re: "Do" in Aikido as a set of intructions
A new (i.e. old) take on harmony:
Suzuki Daisets' teacher Soen, quoted by Tolstoy:
"As means towards the harmonizing of the incompatible, killing and war are necessary."
Ketelaar, Of Heretics and Martyrs in Meiji Japan, p. 171
Bodiford throws cold water, too. His article on Religion and Spirituality in the Encyclopedia of Martial Arts tells us that "DO" is shorthand for BUSHIDO, the third pillar of 1920's fascism (Shinto and Emperor worship the other two.) The Butokukai was put together to act as a recruiting arm through martial arts for suicidal maniacs, at the time, a term of endearment. Invented traditions all.
A brighter light was shone a while back by Dennis Hooker who smacked down my cynicism by pointing out that the handshake, a gesture of trust, began as a gesture of distrust. Lemons/lemonade...
Polarities vary.

Re: "Do" in Aikido as a set of intructions
Play = do, play do.
Aikido = the uses of Aiki, I like that.
Shihonage starts with a handshake.
