Re: You might be an Aikido addict if ....

... after not going to the Jun Fan/Jeet Kune Do class two miles from your house because you have a cold, you drive 20 miles to sit in on Aikido, so you would get some martial arts that night.

Re: You might be an Aikido addict if ....

.... in spite of the winter storm warning and the phrase "no uneccessary travel," you still have to get out and see how crappy the roads are before turing around and deciding it's really not safe to drive 20 miles to Aikido. (Or is that a sign my addiction is weakening?)

... your dojo is closed for the week over the holidays, but Sensei lets you take a key, and 7 of you turn up for 3 hours in the evening to train together. (Another session planned for tonight, too. :-) )

No, Michael, it's not weakening, it's just Upstate New York weather. If you stayed home, you will live to train another day.

Linda in California..... you all are an inspiration, and have some more fun tonight!

Re: You might be an Aikido addict if ....

From an uchideshi aspect:

- you constantly straighten pictures/paintings that are askew

- you bow to the curb before stepping onto it

- when you see a hakama on the floor (that doesn't belong to your sensei), you feel the urge to run over and fold it

- you attend music festivals and use tai sabaki to move throughout the crowd

- you've woken up to see that you have your partner/lover in a nikkyo pin

- you sit in sieza when you hear a bell

- you constantly probe other people's balance when shaking their hand

You know you are addicted when you buy a Granola bar from the vending machine and are disappointed it dropped right down without getting hung up. Because you did not get a chance to demonstrate your skills of placing your hand on the machine frame and making the thing drop with no noise. My friend wanted to how I did that, I invited him to class.

You walk in the opposite direction of a crowd so you can practice "no touch" rondori

You find yourself rather unexpectedly dancing with a shihan and you calm your nerves by telling yourself it is just a different kind of ukemi. Later that night you consider how you could turn it into a, "It had to be felt" thread....

I was thinking I was addicted :O

... you see a fighting movie and think "so unefficient, just use sankyo/ koteghaeshi/ikio/yonkyo/...
... you have searched for other aikidoka in school and talk about what you did in training

And the winner is.....

The only thing I can think of as more deserving of addictive status would be to marry someone based on his or her location to a dojo or sensei!!!!!!

I almost did the same thing funnily enough, even got into talks with the dojo asking how much sessions were, how far from the campus it was and what the training atmosphere was like

you know you're addicted to Aikido when you unconsciously use Taisabaki in public places to minimise risk of collision or getting hit, or is that a sign of constant training lol

or worse, you're watching a martial arts movie, or playing a game with martial arts and you can name the moves

Re: You might be an Aikido addict if ....

You mat one of your rooms to make a dojo.

Your living room IS your dojo, with no furniture, only mats. (Credits to the friend who actually did this.)

You started weapons training with your kids when they were two years old.

Your <10yo kids have no trouble doing a few hundred practice shomenuchi with a bokken without getting tired or sore.

Your avatars on forums are all O’Sensei’s calligraphy.

Your sensei invites you to his house for extra practice....

....on a regular basis.

You’ve read half, or all the Aikido (or Zen or the like) books in your sensei’s library.

You own a cotton hakama and can fold the pleats back with ease.

You can iron the pleats back perfectly in a cotton hakama after washing it by hand.

You go to work in your dogi so you don’t have to change before class.

When buying a jacket, you consider whether or not it will fit over your dogi.

You practice hanmi/kamae while waiting for and riding in elevators alone, while waiting for the kettle to boil, in the shower, or at any time when nobody else is around.

Instead of being happy about a public holiday you’re upset because the dojo is closed too.

You end up impressing everyone at a nightclub with your dancing, even though you can’t dance, because your blending and movement are so good.

You think of naming your first kid “Aiki”.

Your wife, who doesn't do Aikido, suggests naming your kid "Aiki" because you like Aikido so much.

You actually DID name your first kid "Aiki".

Well, OK, the last one I didn't do, but the rest are (or were at one time) all true.

Re: You might be an Aikido addict if ....

From the mists of time something Amos just wrote rang a bell

My former student Sally who was at our Greenwich CT YWCA dojo still lives nearby

Years later, she and I were discussing her horses from the days she taught riding over in New Canaan

One was named Ike, the mare was named Nicky

at the time I met them when visiting the stable the significance of their names did not dawn on me

later she explained she had named them after Ikkyo and Nikyo

My question is, which one of us was the Aikido addict, Sally or myself?

if you redirect the car by just putting palm pressure on the steering wheel while driving and not "grabbing" it. This way you are practicing musubi.

Triangle Re: You might be an Aikido addict if ....

1) After each class, you bombard your Sensei with plenty of questions.
2) You complain if you can't go to class this week
3) One of the most frequent things you say to your parents is "grab my wrist".
4) Taking your school bag off your back looks more like a Naname Kokyu Nage than anything else.
5) You think that doing 6 Aikidō classes per week is an excellent reason for not going anywhere for the holidays.
6) Several times a day, you're caught in Seiza position, with a Bokken in your belt, just about to deliver a full hearted Tsuka Ate into the solar plexus of an imaginary opponent.
7) You can wake up all the people in your house just by doing a Kiai.
8) Often you write or in your notebooks.
9) You dream of one day training with people like Moriteru Ueshiba, Hitohiro Saito and others.
10) You think Shikko is a very efficient means of moving around.
11) You think that crowds are excellent opportunities to train Tai Sabaki, Tai no Henka and Irimi Tenkan.
12) Daily toughts often include things like "hmmm... So basically, Aikidō is Daoism in action".
13) You say Domo Arigato Gozaimashita after diner.

All of these criteria apply PERFECTLY to me. So... I may indeed be an Aikidō addict.

...even though you are still benched because of an issue you are in physical therapy for for who knows how long, you go to sit in on Aikido practice the day after Thanksgiving.

...your dojo has practice the day after Thanksgiving.

Re: You might be an Aikido addict if ....

I'm sure I've contributed to this thread at some point, but here is my post for 2018. Most are mine. A few are friends.

You automatically recognise when you see the older version of 気 written on a book (氣).
Your son and you both have a day off, so you take him to Aikido instead of to the park.
Your son does ikkyo to you when playing naturally.
You have mats in your living room instead of carpet.
Whenever you're standing, you check your posture, "extend ki" ("remove the slack") and start doing subtle exercises.
You have to avoid doing Aiki Age on anyone who shakes your hand because it has become automatic.
You're jealous of the guy who goes to 17 Aikido classes a week because you can only go to to 5 or 6.
You go to 17 Aikido classes a week.
Your very tiny Aikido-practicing daughter is bullied at elementary school. She beats the crap out of the bullies and when the teachers try and get her off them, they are physically unable to.
Your 5yo son is better at kokyu-ho than most of the teenagers who have been practicing since before he was born are.

Naturally having something useful to say is like natural responses during training: It takes much practice.
