GREAT article! It's one of my problems as well, holding back. I think in my case it's probably because if I put more energy into the attack, I'm afraid I'll get thrown with more energy too, and I'm afraid my ukemi isn't up to it. :-(

Yep, that's me, too. Great article, Paul, as always.

Injuries can make you hold back -
my sempais forget all the time that I have a bad shoulder, though informed.
When it´s time for a hard kotegaeshi I tense up to protect that shoulder.
Problem is ,it can take up a week to recover from a hard technique on that shoulder.
Of course this is physical not mental.

Oh, man, any time a column quotes Chuck AND Dennis it's gonna be a good one...and it is. Thank you, Paul, from a mistress of the "restrained attack" :-)

OK so the aim is to "let fly" ,but how do you make it work through what seems an endless
string of corrections ?

Fear of our own potential?
What will happen if we let fly?
How do we stop ourselves from flying?
We all have wings.

I'm certainly not Paul....but are you not given any space in your classes sometimes to find your own way to self-correction?

Re: Article: Let Fly by Paul Schweer

I'd say that the level I´m at now (confident at most techniques) gives me more mental space to
find my weak points ,but in general no !
Lately we have been doing randori again ,and what a pleasure that is !

Re: Article: Let Fly by Paul Schweer

Let Fly when THEY'VE got the wings for it. I'm still a spring chick. I want to go full tilt myself, but I've met several 200 plus pound reasons why I'd prefer they not throw me out of the nest just on their 1st, 2nd, 10th, practice. It was a poem more than an article, still nice stuff though.

We always hear to take it slow. Perhaps the wings come in when we let it be fluid, not stilted and clunky (like myself, I always seem to stop along the way if I'm uncertain)

mike.

Re: Article: Let Fly by Paul Schweer

When A New Born Bird Is Born,
The Nest Seems So Secure.
It Hasn't Begun To Fly It Hasn't Begun To Soar.

After A While The Mother Gently Edges The
Child Out On The Limb.
And Even Though He's Scared The Baby Knows
The Mother Is Doing It Just For Him.

So The Wings Are Fluffed, Stretched, Then Spread.
Then You Just Take A Leap Of Faith, You Can
Either Live Or Play Dead.

The Spirit To Fly Is In Us.
We Can Feel It With Each Breath We Breathe.
Give The Lesson All You Have,
Only Then Will You Truly Succeed.
Lance
Ps. It Has Been My Experience That I Get More Injuries By Holding Back, Then By Giving All I Have.
If I Am Worried About How Much Im Willing To Do,
I Have Already Lost My Concentration Before I Have
Even Begun.
