October 2016 Update
My son Jake has continued with the chemo and is due to start #13 soon - another 5 day affair. The chemo kind of knocks him out for a couple of days and then he bounces back and is up and about doing normal things, albeit at a 'lowered' pace....
Thank you for the update. Sending best wishes.

Re: UFC 2.0 Ultimate Fighting Cancer

Just saw the news about Stan Pranin and Cancer ... we all have to be careful !!!

My son has just had chemo #18 and is out for the count again ... takes about a week for him to be up and about. Then a week or so of normality then another chemo etc. So far he has been doing well. He has regained his weight and gained some. The primary tumour has shrunk considerably, secondary ones are untraceable. His 54 week programme finishes in April. Then what - not sure - re-assessment of some sort. His hair started growing back - again - after the last round. We consider ourselves lucky ... some have not been so ...

Despite all this ... his life is getting a bit easier. His mum is going back part-time teaching, and I have just started teaching in a new school. It's nowhere near normal but feels a bit more normal.

I have been following a self-training regimen for years now and it has proven very useful over the last year. Kinda keeps you sane. I go to the occasional practice or seminar but, to be sure, I get 100 times more out of training by myself.

Just off to the pharmacy to get his post-chemo meds. One of them, I heard, an injection, costs $1,000. He has had it after every chemo. In NZ it is free for us, as has been everything ... so those of you in Trumpland - I advise you to study the NZ and South Korean medical systems. Both are very good. Korea actually seems better than NZ for many things (lived there 15 years).

Re: UFC 2.0 Ultimate Fighting Cancer

PET scan result - today - is clear after one year's worth of treatment. Docs gave him two weeks at the outset - it was that bad.

Thus far, my 17 year old son has beaten Stage 4 Rhabdomyosarcoma in an epic real life-death battle and remained totally calm and sane throughout. His hair is even growing back.

Re: UFC 2.0 Ultimate Fighting Cancer

My son's cancer came back, and with a vengeance. Spreading everywhere ... Not good :-(
Doc's told him he has no chance but he is fighting it. He went thru a round of oral chemo and the tumors grew. Now he is having a bit of light chemo intravenously and it is keeping the cancer at bay, so it seems.
The scariest journey continues...

Re: UFC 2.0 Ultimate Fighting Cancer

(swearing softly under my breath)
I'm so very sorry to read this, Rupert.
This young man's journey has at least bought some precious time to him and to all of you; time measured in a way that to youth seems like ages even when to us older folks it seems to pass like the wind....let him know there are folks he will never meet who are paying attention and sending love.

Re: UFC 2.0 Ultimate Fighting Cancer

After a long battle, Jake passed away in my arms 12th Feb 2018. We kept him at home, ice, sorted out all the funeral arrangements ourselves; friends came to pay their respects; we bought a burial plot overlooking the ocean and a nice remu casket.

We buried him two days later on Valentine's Day. It was a long, hard but great day. He was carried to and lowered into his grave by his friends. During the burial ceremony, pleasant light rain started (it's summer here), then a huge sunbeam shone down on our group and the intense heat, searing heat, amidst the rain, was just insanely magical. I have never experienced that before. A great moment to ponder ... it was like ... he was there. Amazing.

A memorial service was held in the evening in a local church.

Very sorry to hear that Rupert. My sincere condolences.

Naturally having something useful to say is like natural responses during training: It takes much practice.
