Aikido And the military.

I am a member of the United States Air Force. And during a recent deployment to Iraq I was introduced to Some different forms of martial arts. I enjoyed learning a few techniques of both Judo & Kajukenbo. But I wanted something else. So I began to look for Style that better fit my needs and personality. I'm sure a thousand people have said that steven seagal was the reason they learned about Aikido, Well I guess I'm # 1001. Ever sense I was a kid my dad and I watched action movies, Chuck Norris, Bronson, & Seagal.
I always liked his style, But I never knew what it was. After some research on the internet I found that style was Aikido with some variations. And uppon reading more into what Aikido is. I realized I found a style I would like to learn.

What does all this have to do with me and the military?

Well,
Being in the military I move around alot, So I was wondering if there would be a dojo in most of the locations I may be stationed. So If you are in the military also or live around an Air Force base, Could you please reply and let me know where you live.

Howdy,

First, allow me to welcome you to Aikiweb! Second, I'm currently on active duty in the USAF also. Like you, I move around quite a bit. In fact, every three years the AF finds me a new home. Sometimes I have some say in the matter, other times not. Of the six USAF bases I've been assigned to/TDY at, only two had an Aikido dojo within 50 miles of the base. I've found the Dojo Search feature on this site very helpful for locating dojo while TDY or after learning of a new USAF directed future home.

My advice to you, use the Dojo Search feature on this site before filling out your Base Preference/Dream Sheet type paperwork! OK, maybe that's not the best advice for career progression.

I'm stationed at VAFB right now, two more years and I'll probably head back up to the frozen white north. Thank you for serving, best of luck and train well.

Thanks I have looked at the Dojo search and found some Dojos near bases I have been stationed. But the listings are more for the towns not the bases. Also I wanted to see how many other Af people were into Aikido.

I've been studying Aikido for approx. 10 years. The only Aikido club/dojo I can think of that is actually associated with an AF base is the dojo/club at the USAF Academy. When I was stationed in Wyoming, the nearest dojo was over 65 miles away, so I started a small club/dojo and taught beginning Aikido classes for the base youth center. It was a lot of fun and enabled me to continue training/learning. Sometimes the youth center or fitness center will advertise the classes they offer on the base website. You may be able to find something that way as well.

I'm not in the AF myself. All of my work, however, is for the AF.

I'm in Montgomery, AL (Maxwell/Gunter) . I also do a lot of work at Wright-Patterson. If you get to either location, drop me a line and I'll set you up with someone to train with.

Reykjavik Aikikai is a scenic 45 min drive from Keflavik AFB. We have had the pleasure of having a few aikidoka from the base train with us while being stationed there. One more reason to choose Iceland!

It's getting time to update my dream sheet. And I'm tring to consider if there will be a place to train where I go next. Ireally regret not starting my training when I lived in Okinawa, Japan for 4 years.
But, I may have the chance to go there again.

I really didn't have a witty reply to this play on names.
Normally I'm a touch quicker, Maybe I was just having an off day. Or perhaps I could be slipping !

I am in the Army. (although spent 10 years in the Air Force). Great Dojo's in the DC area if you go to Andrews, Pentagon, or other places in the area. I am in Germany now and nearest dojo is about 30KM away so it is not something I can do often.

On the side note, my battalion just set up the most awesome dojo I have ever seen! It is literally wall to wall interlocking tatami and it will hold about 120 folks! I also have barracks to house at least that many too! (can you say seminar!!!). Chuck Gordon you out there??? Come on down!! We just got it finished!

I have the fortune to be able to work with soldiers in my battalion. Unfortunately, they don't really do aikido, but it is fun throwing the wrestlers and MMA guys around. I am just starting up a combatives program for our guys. It is not aikido, but you do what you have to in order to train!!

Hello all! This is my first time posting so I apologize in advance for any mistakes. The head instructor of the dojo in Taos that was listed is Craig Dunn sensei. I believe that he goes back many years with Seagal sensei and may still be close to him. Before moving on (given that Seagal sensei was cited as an inspiration to begin training) you may want swing by that way.

I can second Kevin Leavitt's mention of the wealth of aikido in and around DC. I cut my teeth with Takeguchi Sensei at Capital Aikikai, and there are several other good dojos in the area.

On a side thread, I teach on an army base (Ft. Detrick, Frederick, MD), but get very few military in the class. I've had a few MPs, but that's about it. My theory is that 1) the class is too late in the evening, we start at 7:30 pm, or 1930 as they like to say, and most of the military folks have been up since 0-dark-30. and 2) aikido may be perceived to be too docile a martial art for many hard core military types. Anyone else had a similar experience?

I have been in the AF 13 years and been practicing for 14 years. Every base I go to I find Aikido somewhere. I know of many other AF folks that practice Aikido somewhere in the world, although my list is outdated. I too trained in Okinawa, when were you there? Did we overlap? If you are looking for an assignment that would help you continue training in aikido anything in the DC area (i.e the dreaded staff job), Wright-Patt (where I currently train), Maxwell (Greg is a wonderful teacher and has a great thing going down there), Hanscom, LA Air Station, Dover, Pete Field or the Academy, Kadena, Yokota, Misawa (of course). Belgium, Germany and England all have dojo's within a 1 hour drive of the various US Military installations. Florida has many places to practice, but Tyndall is near none of them. Hurlburt and Eglin are closer, but it is still a drive. Keelser has a few options and Robins in closer to a few dojos as well.
What is your AFSC? What kind of job do you want and are you willing to career broaden? Keep in touch and maybe all of us AF/Military Aikido folks can meet someday.
