Making there own weapons.
HI. How are you. Does anyone else make their own weapons and use them for training. I have made my own before and was pondering to myself whether or not other people do the same.

Yes, I have made my own weapons - bokken, jo, tanto (Two sets, actually, because I train with my wife!).

Re: Making there own weapons.
I'm in the process of making my own tanto.... So far I got the shape right, but the size.... are there any schematics for tanto (and bokken) .... or.... ....?
BTW I made my jo out of a broom handle...

Re: Making there own weapons.
Ive made a few bokkens. I takes some practice. I used pieces of purpleheart that were 1x2x40, cut out the rough shape, put it in a vice and went at it with a spokeshave. Its a lot of work, but fun and rewarding if you get one that comes out nice. There are directions at www.aikidofaq.com

Re: Making there own weapons.
I've recently taken up old style metal working; forge, anvil and all. So far I've made a few throwing knives, and I'm working my way up to bigger items. Hopefully I'll be able to make full size swords someday. The only wooden weapons I've made are a pair of nun-chucks, but that's hardly an Aikido weapon. It's probably not exactly what you're talking about, but since someone asked, I thought I'd share.

Personally I prefer heavy bokkens because then light ones and swords feel...well...really really light. Especially one handed.

Re: Making there own weapons.
it is very rewarding to make your own bokken. we do make it ourselves here, because :
1. to order comes out really very expensive
2. we have a lot of good wood coming in from indonesia/malaysia
3. we have some time off to get busy...
my favorite part is the shaping and the sanding.
oh and the questions that come after: how did you make this so shiny?
so smooth?
did you buy it? where?

Sounds tricky! Tell us the secret!!!
One of my sempai made his bokken and a few for other people... he's a woodworker by trade and they are really the most beautiful items to behold, esp the cherry one he made for one of the kids. Hasn't made me one yet though!

Re: Making there own weapons.
I bought a cheap-as-crap lathe in a pawn shop, made it longer with some square tubing, and channel iron, now I have a turned jo that I made for myself. I am making several others for friends, and I just wanted to screw around with a wood-lathe anyway.
There is an exotic wood store fairly close and I can get cocbolo and hickory, & several other woods.
I wonder what folks would give for a jo made of these exotic woods?
Maybe I will post a couple on e-bay. Fun to sand and finish it by hand too.(gotta love linsseed oil)
My first real woodworking project.

Re: Making there own weapons.
I made my own weapon set out of ipeah (iron wood). I had a great time doing it.
I like them because they feel handmade and personal. They are heavy and so-far unbreakable. I feel an extra connection to them because I made them myself. I recommend trying it if you have the time and inclination.

Re: Making there own weapons.
I've made my own jo.
I used a piece of dowel (Tasmanian Oak), cut it to a length of around the height of my armpit (about 52-53 inches).
I sanded it with a fairly fine sandpaper (120 grit) before giving it a coat of linseed oil, and then sanded it again with 120 grit, then with 180 grit (extremely fine) and gave it another coat of linseed. It's currently drying, so I'll see how it comes up tomorrow.

Re: Making there own weapons.
Well...my school has decided to throw a "Senior Project" on my graduating class through which I can research and choose whatever project topic I want to....so I chose Aikido, duh...
Well, for one part of the project, I have to produce a product. Well, what type of product could I produce for aikido?...Anyway, to make a long, boring story short, I chose to make my own jo...
So, there you go,
Bryce

Re: Making there own weapons.
I have access to a computer numerical control machine so after a bit of programing, I can now generate as many bokken (Itto and Keishi ryu) as I want from just about any material I care to use... Might start selling them...
