Hi everyone,

is there anything i can do at home with my bokken to strengthen my wrists? (no jokes please) also, the jo? we never really study bokken or jo for long in class and i'd like some excercises i can do at home in between sessions. or will practicing the kata be enough?

Re: Home Practice?

You can purchase a teburito or suburito to strengthen theforearms and wrists (think I spelled them right).

How about this?

Plenty of free stuff on there (clips, documents, routines etc) though you might need buy the video for the full details.

Plus you'll need to get the clubs or make some yourself -

Re: Home Practice?

Suburito is the mother of all bokkens. Indeed the bokken from which all bokken were wrought.

I recomend this one: http://www.bokkenshop.com/eng/297.html

Excellent for strength practice.

Re: Home Practice?

It's like a bokken but the end is real heavy making it great for building up the forearms and wrists.

Re: Home Practice?

Hi Adrian,

I used to watch tv with my bokken in my hands and when a commercial came on, I`d put the tip on the floor and squeeze my hands like I was wringing out a towel while holding the other end, just like I was doing yonkyo, pushing the tip into the floor.

After class, my sensei wants us to finish class by performing shomen cut using jo - 50 reps right handed and 50 reps left handed. It is good for building up the wrist i'd say and breathing exercise too.

Boon.

Re: Home Practice?

If your looking for something a little smaller then those clubs to build up your wrist, I recommend this.

Re: Home Practice?

Here's what I do with the bokken (a heavy suburi bokken):

gentle cuts to warm up
50 cuts with right foot forwards, but stationary (shomen or yokomen)
50 cuts with left foot forwards, but stationary (shomen or yokomen)
50 cuts stepping either side of the centre line
50 cuts stepping either side of the centre line but using the uchi komi motion ('blocking' motion)
repeat last two sets of 50 cuts.
Extension exercise with arms (stretching gently in front)

Do these one straight after another
If you do this every morning (may be hard at first), your aikido, back muscles and cutting strength will improve, as well as your wrist strength.

Catching bricks (arms out in front, throw house bricks up and catch with fingers) x 80 is also good for developing grip strength. (old wu chi exercise)
