I am very suspect of 'self-defence' courses in that much of self-defence depends on immediate and instinctive reaction. If you don't train regularly you loose this reaction ability very quickly. I have heard comments from policemen that their self-defence training is too sporadic, and that most people revert back to what they would do themselves before doing the training. This is why aikido 'doesn't work' in may people's opinion; the time that is spent training regularly is insufficient (this is particularly the case for martial arts which involve a developed responsiveness to the agressor).
Yep, a few simple things is great for self-defence; but you must practise them consistently.
