Koshiita Material

Hi all,

I got a twill duck hakama from aikido24 last year and the massively thick and stiff koshiita backboard they used has been a menace for ukemi . I'm looking to replace it with the softer and flexible rubber neoprene that's being used by Tozando for their hakama. Does anyone know where I can buy that material? Thanks for your help!

Re: Koshiita Material

Fifteen yrs ago a dojomate recommended plumbers gasket, a sheet of pliable vulcanized rubber, and I've been thrilled with it: indestructable, but pliable enough to roll over.

Thanks. That reminds me that I recently broke my koshi-ita. I'll see if I can replace it with some plumbers gasket.

I have used mouse pads. Choose one with the thickness and stiffness you like and then cut it to shape.

I've used a sample of vinyl carpet. I liked it, but I think you will find it to hard based on what you write.

A piece of advice though: before you do the work pour some hot water on the material to see how it behaves when you will wash you hakama. No reason to put something in there that will fall apart if you decide to get rid of the tatami dirt and sweat that builds up in the fabric

Good day to all

Or just do materials research first. It is very easy to find out the qualities of any substance online these days.
