Helicopter Throw
Hi All,
I have recently re-read Angry White Pyjamas and in the book there are several references to a 'helicopter throw'. From the description it didn't seem clear to me what the actual technique was.
Does anybody know what the real Japanese name for the throw is please? Is this is a popular nick name?
Many Thanks,
Ed

It might be a rotating kata-guruma (like a firemans lift).
In Judo nage usually rotates while doing this, to spin uke around a bit to stop him twisting out of it.

What used to be called the "helicopter" is one of the throws out of kata guruma.
With respect to the question at hand, it could well be kata guruma or the upside down (uke's back across nage's shoulders) version called ganseki otoshi.
I've seen film of Kondo Sensei helicopter his uke off from ganseki otoshi. She landed flat on her back and got right back up which must have been pretty tough.

KATA GURUMA or GANSEKI OTOSHI is what I would have called it, too.
Isoyama's version doesn't twirl. See it now at:

There are several examples of the twirling helicopter in the 50th Anniversary of Sokaku Takeda Demo ($49.95)

I've seen more than a few uke projected out of kokyu nage. One notable sensei was Kanai Sensei.

I should have said:
I've seen more than a few uke projected into a flat spin out of kokyu nage. One notable sensei was Kanai Sensei.
Definitely looked looked a less-than-smooth landing. Kind of like watching someone skip flat stones on water...
Those are the ones that make me think "uke shoulda gotten some frequent flyer miles from that one."

I think it is morally wrong to throw a person off a helicopter.
