Ukemi saved me from getting busted up...

While I haven't been practicing aikido for a while now, it saved me a bad bruising Thursday (23 Dec).

At work, in a bit of a hurry, going from one place to another, stepping over skids of steel blocks... Oops, caught a toe, heading for a face-plant.

Haven't done a roll for about 5 years. Did a beauty - little bit tender on the spinous process of the left scapula - concrete machine shop floor - and a surprised employer. I think he was going to try to catch me (or thinking about filling out the safety report) but by then I was standing up, picking up the scales and pens that fell out of my pockets when I was upside down... Didn't even drop the (fortunately small) block of steel I was carrying.

Thank you to my judo and aikido training partners, sempai and sensei over the years. Christmas without a concussion is way better than the alternatives.

Congrats!

This sort of thing happens more embarrassingly often to me than I like to admit. Usually the back fall rather than the front, but both have happened. Often, due to all the training, I trip and catch myself without falling in situations where I would have fallen on my face in the past.

Re: Ukemi saved me from getting busted up...

Thanks for the good feelings. Ukemi has saved my bacon a few times... Came off the bicycle a few times (gravel, or curb, or... for mae ukemi, falling off a window sill when the bit I was holding onto while prying on another bit, came away ushiro ukemi... ) What hurt the most in some of those occasions was when people got in the way trying to save me from the fall.

I have had several 'rolling saved my butt' letters from former students. Saved my son who got hit by a truck in Japan....a small truck. Something we tend to take for granted, but probably the most practical skill we get from Aikido.

Machine shop floor is a bit different from a mat, success nonetheless with minimal injury

Thanks. All happened too fast to get scared... Glad there was open floor in front of me and not another skid full of steel or the forklift or... or...
