Re: Fight as you train...Huh?
I guess that is why aiki-no-jitsu was just one of three methods.
Perhaps we should all try to maintain balance in our training.

Don't even pretend that this was anything but a charlatan believing his own illusions and being unwise enough to try them outside his own cult. Those boys he was playing with at the beginning of the tape, a portion I hadn't seen before, had "drunk the cool aid".
It's a lot like watching Dillman. He started off with the one touch knock out and has now moved to the kiai knockout. The Maharishi started with simple meditation and by the end was teaching people to "levitate" (which involved sitting on the floor and bouncing). L Ron Hubbard started with "Clear" being the ultimate goal. But when folks had attained that status, miraculously new levels were discovered for the folks to pay big bucks to work towards.
There are folks who can do some stuff that seems virtually magical... I have trained with some. But there is a certain presence, a connection which one feels when working with those folks. This guy stood there while his opponent came up, grabbed his hand and punched him repeatedly in the face! He was genuinely taken aback when he took the first hit to the face! I thought he was going to cry... This is not an example of aiki no jutsu not working... it's an example of a man with great personal power (who else can get people to suspend their common sense like that?) becoming so into his own myth that he thinks he can actually fly and jumps off the cliff. That's all. This guy had no clue.

Re: Fight as you train...Huh?
I have been "contact" punched by top Dillman instructors to no avail. Yet, I heave used some level of aiki-no-jutsu during a fight. But there has to be a form of to that accompanies it. Sympathetic movement can be hypnotizing. But, as I have said before, you cannot do Aiki on a cow. There has to be some level of intellect that is willing to get hypnotized. It is also hard to hypnotize a real fighter who wants to really fight.
There is a story about when Kenpo Celebrity "Speakman" confronted Dillman and allegedly said , "well, does it work in a fight?" Dillman allegedly said, "yes.". Then Speakman got into a neutral bow with guard up. He began to attain what Ed Parker called "the gaseous state". Dillman allegedly said, "point taken."

Of course, I was disappointed.

This video has been posted here two or three times in the past. I'm sure a bit of searching will bring up some threads with pages of feedback in them. Hunt them out, no need to start it all again.

Re: Fight as you train...Huh?
Was it not Mike Tyson who said that, "Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth"? I try to remind my fellow Aikidoka of this when they never seem to get hit during training because everyone is so conscious of being "nice" to each other. It may not be quite as smooth and flowing to execute if that does happen--and it most physical conflicts it will to some extent. It appears that this guy's plan fell apart very quickly.

While I'm sure he did say that at some point, its not original, there is an old military maxim that states 'no plan survives engagement with the enemy intact' that has been around for many decades if not centuries, I've heard it attributed to Napoleon before, prob older than that too.

Concur...Or as my old Grumpy Viet Vet Ranger 1st Sgt used to say "When the Shit hits the fan you might as well throw the book out the window..."
That's his Philly Take on the axiom I guess.
I use the Mike Tyson Quote as a Sig Line on some forums...
