Please help with a small bit of history

Rather than add to the thread drift I thought I'd start a new thread here where perhaps folks more knowledgeable than me could fill in the gaps or make any corrections they see fit.

Back on point, "A Life in Aikido" is a book written by Kisshomaru Ueshiba is a book that talks a little about O'Sensei's life. In it he tells a lot of antidotes about how O'Sensei saw ghosts, tengu, and such... I would say that makes him a mystic. He also tells about how one Moriteru Ueshiba became involved with the Omoto-kyo sect of Shinto. He was a personal acquaintance of Oinsaburo Deguchi, the leader of the Omoto-kyo sect at the time. During this time Moriteru Ueshiba is said to have a student by the name of Naohi Deguchi, who became the third leader of this sect, as well as the majority of the Omoto staff at that time. Read the book (it is pretty good), if anyone is making it up, it is Kisshomaru Ueshiba.
Hi Ryan,
this isn't how I recall the story going. Thet way I thought it went is that "Moriteru Ueshiba" (current doshu) is the grandson of Morihei Ueshiba and that he had no real contact, if any, with Onisaburo Deguchi.
I'm not familiar with Oomoto Kyo so I guess I can't really comment on what constitutes priesthood within that sect; for all I know he was ordained within it.
Also, I know Nao Deguchi was the leader before Onisaburo Deguchi. Is that who you're referring to?

Sorry Matt, I responded on the other thread before I read this one. I have the same understanding you do.

Re: Please help with a small bit of history

Hi Matthew,

Oomoto always has two leaders, a woman (who has the soul of a man) and a man (who has the soul of a woman). Nao and Onisaburo were the first pair. Naohi was the third leader after Nao, her grandmother and Sumiko, her mother. I don't know about Nao being Morihei's student ("Moriteru" is a mistake.), but her husband, Hidemaru was, although perhaps more of a patron than a student.

Also, on another thread, you asked about Morihei being a priest. In Oomotokyo, all believers receive a basic training which qualifies them as a priest. When I visited Ayabe about ten years ago, the basic training was a week long. Upon completing it, you are an Oomoto priest. Thus when someone, for example Steven Seagal, claims to be a priest, it means they did the week long training.

Re: Please help with a small bit of history

I got my information from the biography of O'sensei written by Kisshomaru Ueshiba. Unless, he's crazy, I'm taking my antidotes directly from that text.

It was a typo. I put the grandson's name instead of O'Sensei. Naohi Deguchi was the daughter of Onisaburo and Sumi Deguchi, and she became the third (and I beleive current) leader. She succeeded her father. (Again, "A Life In Aikido" is a good read...)

Re: Please help with a small bit of history

Hi Ryan,

Kurenai Deguchi, the great granddaughter of Onisaburo, is the current and fifth spiritual leader of Oomoto. Naohi succeeded her mother, Sumiko. Hidemaru Deguchi, Naohi's husband "succeeded" Onisaburo. I put succeeded in quotes because the roles that the two gentlemen played in the organization were very different.

For those who are interested in Oomoto spirituality, I highly recommend Hidemaru's writings. Although he was less mentally stable than Onisaburo (and that is saying a lot), his writings are much more accessible.
