I am starting Aikido.

Hello,

I start Aikido in 4 days. This is the first time I will be doing a Martial Art unless you consider wrestling a Martial Art which I have been doing for 8yrs. Is there anything I should know before I start or anything I should read?

Wear comfortable clothes, and show up a bit early.

Hi, Andrew, and welcome!

Advice?

Pay attention to whatever etiquette is being displayed by other students and copy it.

Relax and smile :-)

Don't expect to remember individual techniques from one class to the next, as in many aikido dojo a variety of things are taught in each class. Just pay attention to what is in front of you at the moment, and eventually patterns will emerge and you will have "aha!" moments.

yeah...and have fun!

Hi Andrew,

You will fit right in. I think your wrestling training will serve you well in aikido, especially on unbalancing uke to apply a technique. Enjoy.

Consider this, your first lesson in Aikido.

Be confident and honest with yourself, the instructor and your new family. But most importantly, Remain humble!

I've been practicing aikido for about three months, and I love it! It was hard to walk into a room full of people I didn't know, but I've found out that everyone is very and eager to help.

It's been challenging but really fun at the same time.

I think you'll really enjoy it.

One other thing...

Remember the empty cup philosophy. Leave your wrestling at the door when you enter. I expect you will already have good body awareness and it will help you greatly in the dojo but try to remember that you will not only be learning different techniques but a different philosophy.

I hope you have a lot of fun!

As you begin on the first day. Take the time to attack your sensei at full speed and strength and try and wrestle him down.

If you survive unscath, feel lucky. You have indeed found the right dojo to train in.

If you survived barely... well at least the sensei is tip top on his aikido techniques.

If you didn't survive... you won't need aikido anymore.

If the sensei didn't survive. Congratulations... you just saved yourself from a whole lot of grief and complaining in, about how aikido doesn't work, aikido is about spirituality, what should an uke do, what does a yokomen translate into real life and etc... forum discussions.

Draw strength from stillness. Learn to act without acting. And never underestimate a samurai cat.

One of the oddest things I've seen written in a while. It suggests that if someone is not capable of beating you, they are not capable of teaching you...a premise that is clearly false.

Further, it sets up an adversarial relationship between student and teacher. I can't imagine that would be healthy in the long run.

Paul

I have to agree with Paul here. This sounds like A Very Bad Freakin' Idea to me.

If I had done this in my dojo when I first started I would:

A. Have been clobbered

B. Have been thrown out without delay
