Finger Locks

I recently took up training in Chin Na and have been working primarily with finger locks.

I was just wondering if any Aikido styles are using these and to what extent.

Re: Finger Locks

Daito-Ryu has some. I haven't seen any "official" Aikido finger locks, but I bet some people practice them.

Re: Finger Locks

Yep, fell into one the other day...missed a kotegaeshi I believe, the fingers were there, so I dropped uke with those.

The one I see most often in aikido is the make a wish one.

Best,
Ron

Re: Finger Locks

Bernie Lau does a number of different finger locks....as my fingers would be able to tell you. I believe that he got a number of them from Wally Jay.

Re: Finger Locks

Thanks for your replies.
I was looking to see if they were part of an official syllabus any where.
I was thinking they may have been and just dropped off over a period of time.

I training with Dr, Yang Jwang-Ming and his students in the YMAA organization. Dr Yang's book says:

"Japanese Jujitsu and Aikido are based on the same principles as Qin Na and taiji. Since these countries were significantly influenced by Chinese culture, it seems probable that Chinese Qin Na also influenced thier indigenous martial arts".

We do so much in Aikido not only where the fingers are directly accessible like in Kote Gaeshi but that will also make a closed fist open up making the fingers vulnerable. The finger locks just blend so seamlessly.

I can tell you too! After only 3 classes, my fingers would divorce me if they could.

Cops I've trained with were very quick with them. And one guy who did some sort of gong fu. Other than that, I think they're sort of frowned on in most practice.

Re: Finger Locks

Fingerlocks are there, for people who study. Maybe it is good to know that they are there. When teaching, I very rarely use them; except to show that they are there.

Re: Finger Locks

They are an integrated part of every technique. For example We have a very small statured Japanese female Yudansha. When she takes Ukemi from you wondering how the heck she is going to control and pin you with her tiny hands...

In a word. Fingers! Ouch!!! Well that be two words... but her use of an Uke's fingers is just as good as any technique I've experianced so it hard for me not to think of finger "locks" and ouch!!! in the same breath. LOL

Re: Finger Locks

Every martial art I've ever been exposed to recognizes the vulnerability of fingers and their submission value. Also if you can get a hold of a pinky, thumb whatever it can be a very painful distraction to set up a finishing move.

Re: Finger Locks

We use finger locks, and have practiced them a few times in an orgenized way, though less then the larger locks, mostly because the finger locks are easy to apply once you grasp the concept of a lock, and are awrare of the opportunities the finger locks present.

Just like any other lock, one should be careful of placing too much importance or trust on the Technique. In a fight, your attacker might be willing to break a finger in order to win.

Re: Finger Locks

My aikido instructor uses a lot of finger locks. Personally I don't bother with them. I've had too many fingers broken in my life and they have never slowed me down. They are good for compliant restraints (police situations), but not so good for what I do.

Hello my friend. I'm doing well thanks. I am getting back into Yoshinkan training soon. Trying to get my schedule in order (3 kids is a challenge..lol). I am currently training in jujutsu and did krav maga training during my Yoshinkan hiatus. It's great to be back on the forums again. Hope your training is going well
