Problem with heart that may prevent me

Guys I want to ask you if anyone has a similar medical condition I'm facing right now. It started about 15 years ago when I was a teenager I was training very hard for 3 hours a day and classes were physically really demanding. After one of the classes during a hot day I felt severe shoot in the heart (as someone strikes you with a needle) and then I feel a pressure in the chest from the left side. It's also difficult to breath during those "attacks". For a long time I live with that and it comes and goes. Sometimes I do not have it for months and then it happens and lasts for a day or two.
Several months ago I started Aikodo practice and it's not too demanding physically and only for an hour every day. It was going ok up until last month. Since then I've had 2 such "attacks" and this last one lasts longer (3-4 days already and still there). It starts as pinching in the heart and then pressure.
Before I started Aikido I told my physician about my heart, she run a cartography and found nothing. I insisted and she referred me to a cardiologist and now the cardiologists do not want to even talk to me as soon as they ask my age (I can still be considered pretty young). I guess they just do not want to spend their time on me assuming that I'm faking it. And that's not because of my insurance, I can go to any doc without even being referred to them, but apparently they don't want to waste their time on me even with a reference... I know it sounds weird, but believe me it's a fact, otherwise I would already be there.
Now I still will be trying other cardiologists, but until I have a chance to talk to one of them, if you have some unfortunate experience with such a condition, could you tell me what is it and how you deal with it for at least temporary relief. Also I would like to know how it affects your Aikido training and do you make some adjustments? I really do not want to give up my training.
I have to say that I have never smoked in my life and I believe overloading created this condition. It usually happens after some intense workout.

Again, reffer to a physician with your symptoms. You sound like someone who may be suffering from Angina Pectoris. This condition is secondary to coronary artery disease (CAD). Angina won't necessarily show up on a ECG or bloodwork. Do your symptoms occur at rest or after exertion? Do they subside with rest, or does it seem to have a mind of it's own? Find out. Your body is trying to tell you something, listen to it! training with Angina is possible, don't despair, however training without a diagnosis or treatment plan is foolish. good luck!

Ditto: See your physician. I don't know your age but you could have a congenital heart condition that would make training risky. Pistol Pete Maravich had a problem and died during a basketball game. Unknown chest pain could be anything from a pulled muscle to a more serious heart condition.

Re: Problem with heart that may prevent me

Definitely go see the doc! Your heart is your heart, not your big toe. Something goes wrong with that it's serious. I had an SVT (Supraventricular Tachycardia) episode in aikido class about two years ago. They put me on some sort of Beta Blocker for a year. Cartia I believe? Anyway, I was restricted from working out until they ran full tests. After more tests than I can count they didn't find anything wrong, I am healthy as a horse....well a horse my age at least. Was on Beta Blockers for a year then went off after I did not have another episode. During that time I trained as I normally did before. I started meditating once a day, and that may have helped me as well. Western medicine had no answers so I went to an Eastern Medicine Doc. He said It could have been an allergic reaction to something. Hard to say since it has never happened again. He said the meditations were good for the heart and health in general and encouraged me to continue that at least.

Remind you I am no doctor, but you may try an internal medicine Dr. They are usually pretty good. Surprisingly enough, it may not be your heart. If you tell your case to a Dr. and they don't want to listen, move on, you don't need them! Don't mess with your ticker! Stay on top of it.

That's my 2.5 cents.

Victims, aren't we all.

Re: Problem with heart that may prevent me

Been in a similar situation with regards to Physicians and heart problems. I am 29 and my first issue with my heart/circulatory/bloodpressure/vagal nerve was when I was 17. Here's the gist.

It took 10 years for me to be in the right place with the right cardiologist who new exactly what was wrong. In the end, my heart is "strong like ox," but I have a vagal nerve that is hypersensitive. I take care of placing myself in situations that will aggravate the situation and I now know exactly what is "wrong".

Find the right cardiologist, i.e. ask around to find someone who is up on modern research. Doctors too are busy people and their knowledge bases can become antiquated.

Note that it may not be a cardiologist you want to see. It may be a neurologist or some other form of specialist. Medical advice from a competant professional is the only way to find out what is going on.

Best of luck!

Hey anonymous,

Just curious if when you signed up at the school if they had enough brains to ask or have you fill out a form which would have notified them of your condition. The way your post reads makes me think not.
