1st Dan Testing Fees?

Was wondering about the fee for 1st dan tests. Is it according to Hombu for everyone or does the instructors, shihans incharge decides how much it is?

I am pretty sure it is set by your organization. Haven't gotten that far yet.

Re: 1st Dan Testing Fees?

Testing fees are probably different in every organisation.

If you want an Aikikai certificate from Hombu however, once you have passed, I think I am correct in saying they are only issued once a year (end of January?)

2008 prices I think, were in the region of:- $188 for 1st & 2nd dan, $220 for 3rd, $290 for 4th, $800 for 5th and $905 for 6th dan .

Assuming these are approximately correct, does anyone know why the sudden jump in fees at 5th dan?

Not that I ever need worry...

Re: 1st Dan Testing Fees?

I payed $140 usd for my shodan, about 7 years ago. I could be wrong, but I think all of that went to hombu dojo, as I got it through the CAA, and I don't think they charge their own fee for the rank.

Re: 1st Dan Testing Fees?

Every organization is going to determine what the testing fee should be. There are however contributing factors that may change the cost of the test. If your dan testing is recognized by Honbu then the base cost of your test will be determined by the strength of your currency against the yen. From there it depends on whether or not your organization wants to charge additional fees. For those organizations that do not have a test fee, whether they are recognized by honbu or not are just structured differently. My friend has a dojo, and rather than charge students annual dues for the organization they simply pay them for the student. The student pays dues throughout the year and that is just how they decide to budget their expenses.
