37th Anniversary of Founder's Passing

Hi folks,

Just a reminder that today, April 26th, is the anniversary of the death of the founder of aikido, Morihei Ueshiba sensei. He passed away on April 26th, 1969, making today the 37th anniversary of his passing.

Is your dojo doing anything to commemorate his life and passing?

Re: 37th Anniversary of Founder's Passing

Training -- the dojo I study at just completed a full weekend seminar offering to O'Sensei (and Kanai Sensei), with guest instructors Kei Izawa Sensei (5th Dan, Tanshin Juku Dojo, Boulder, CO) and Yasumasa Itoh Sensei (6th Dan, Tekko Juku Dojo, Boston, MA). The training schedule is still up on the website in different places.

It was a really great experience that included a memorial service performed by Rev. Shumyo Kojima (Zenshuji Soto Mission, Los Angeles, CA).

After class tonight there will also be an incense offering in the same vein as the weekend service.

Re: 37th Anniversary of Founder's Passing

I am unfortunaly skipping out on training tonight, I am so exhausted between school work and trying to get the dojo finished, we are not working there today so I am taking the time to rest up

Yes, some of us are heading down to Granite Falls, WA for the Ireisai held there. Always a great weekend.

Our dojo is training; I am working.

for the dynamic spiral of existence embraces both extremes.

We didn't do anything special, apart from training, but maybe that is the best to commemorate the passing of O Sensei?

Re: 37th Anniversary of Founder's Passing

Personally, I honour my Sensei's passing - Edwin (Ted/Eddie) WJ Stratton Sensei, Founder of the UK Yoshinkan - who passed away on 9 March 2000, and I train the 9th of March every year in his honour!

I also light a candle on his birthday every year - 17 July.

Being Yoshinkan we also Honour Shioda Sensei on the date of his passing, which was, believe it or not, 17 July 1994. The UK memorial to Shioda Sensei is held on the nearest weekend every year by us, the Ken Shin Kai.

Please see http://www.kenshinkai.org.uk/GSMS2006.htm

As for O'Sensei, well we don't tend to do anything for that, but I do try to train and/or honour him on this day. This year I raised a glass too!

That is a good point, just train hard and you honor his memory

We girls took flowers, and boys took incenses. We put them on the altar. We trained.

We trained and had a short talk on the Founder's vision of Budo as love.

I trained and dislocated my toe. I did it just for O Sensei!

Re: 37th Anniversary of Founder's Passing

Due to the thread done to this subject last year, yesterday we had an special class. In our dojo there are also Kung-Fu and Taichi. We invited those guys, old students and relatives of our group members. We saw a DVD of Osensei in his 50`s and his period in Iwama. We had incense and a candle.

We had a talk about O-sensei and the sense of the training of every one and after that, of course,... we had an open class with all the people.

It was a very special moment and the people was happy.
