Hombu Dojo
I was wondering whether anyone could help. i am of to Japan next week for a month and have a few questions;
1) I plan to spend three or four days training at hombu arounf the 12th of August but I have heard that hombu maybe closed, can anyone verify this?
2) I have lost my memebership card but I do have my aikikai yudansha card, am I still liable to pay for a new one?
3) Does hombu have any accommodation for visiting students?
4) Is it possible to pay by the day? I am not to keen to pay (I'm Scottish) 8000 yen for a few days training.
5) I saw Iwagaki sensei last summer in Europe does any one have an address for his dojo?
6) My final question....I understand that it is not terribly uncommon for koryu ryuha to take part in martial demonstrations does anyone know of any taking place on kyushu or Honshu between 19 July and 15 August?
Thank you very much in advance

Paul,
As much as I can answer:
1. The Hombu summer vacation is 12-17 August, so it looks like it will be closed when you want to go, unless you change your schedule .
2. Not sure about this, it doesn`t mention it on their site, but I believe that they have a visitors fee that you can pay on a daily basis. Don`t know about the membership card.
3. No accomodation that I am aware of, I remember Peter Goldsbury mentioning a couple of local hotels in a previous post on the AJ board, try this link
http://65.119.177.201/cgi-bin/ubb/ul...c&f=9&t=000629
4. See answer to 2.
5 & 6 I`m afraid I can`t help.

A difficult problem is easily solved by asking yourself the question, "Just how would the Lone Ranger handle this?"

Last time I was there, they had a daily rate of 1500 yen plus 3% tax for a total of 1575 yen for a full day's training.

That's still the case, so far as I know. I've never shown any card or ID at all when just going for the day - they sometimes ask, but I just say that I didn't bring it. Technically (I think) you're supposed to be Aikikai to drop in for the day, but as I said there's no check, so if you're not and don't mention that fact specifically then there won't be a problem. Just pay your money and go on in,
Best,
Chris

Re: Hombu Dojo
To answer your question about training in summer, it's not "too" hot to train, but it comes close! Tokyo is unbelievably humid in the summertime, and hombu doesn't have air conditioning. But it'll toughen you up!
On a serious note, it is hard, but every day there is a dojo full of people who get through it... You should be okay. Have fun!

Thats pretty good! I remember at the Yoseikan Hombu you had to pay 5000 yen, which is a month fee, regardless of how long your training for. I am sure there are schools that charge a lot more.

Re: Hombu Dojo
Hang on a minute! 5000 yen works out to be less than 500 yen a week if you train 3 times a week for a month!!!

Hey Chad, where in Tokyo are you staying? Yeah Tokyo is really hot in summer and so humid. Its not as bad as Okinawa though. I'll be back there one day...

Re: Hombu Dojo
Hi Darin,
Okinawa is more humid than Tokyo? I've been to Thailand and Malaysia in the summer, and those places aren't as humid as Tokyo.
I live in the Saitama suburbs of Tokyo. It takes about an hour to commute to hombu, but it's worth it. A one-hour work commute is considered normal here, though.

I think I have been through Saitama on my way to Ashikaga. Don't know that part of Japan very well.
I used to live in Shinagawa in Tokyo. I never really had the time to train in Japan as I always finished work late. Yeah Okinawa is really humid.

Re: Hombu Dojo
Okinawa is hotter than Tokyo but no way is it more humid.
Hombu dojo keeps the windows open in summer.
