Smile Coming back after a long absence

I went to class last night after a long, long absence, and it was wonderful! I was amazed at how much I remembered. It really reminded me why I started practicing in the first place.

It was kind of intimidating to come back, but I felt so welcomed, people remembered me and said hello. It was great.

So if you've dropped your classes, go ahead and start again.

welcome back to aikido Andrea!

I have a student who practiced for a year or so, and then quit due to circumstances. He recently started with me after being off the mat for close to ten years. Aikido is still very much in his body even after that long absence. Pretty incredible huh? Anyway, welcome back to aikido, hope you continue to enjoy it so much.

best, Rachel

Rachel, thanks for the kind words! I was really surprised how much I retained. I guess aikido really does stay with you.

I have always liked the feeling of community in the dojo, and coming back after a long time really emphasized that. It was so great!

Sometimes a break is the best thing you can do for your body and your psyche.

A couple years ago, I took 4 months off training. My biggest fear in returning was my sensei calling me up to uke again. I asked him if I should wear my dogi without hakama so he would not call me up until I got back into the swing of things. He said that wouldn't be necessary and he gave me several weeks to get back into the rhythm before calling me up to uke. Communicating with him was essential, as it took away my fears and let me ease back into Aikido at a comfortable pace.
