Thumbs down Promotion in MAAF

Hi everyone, I tried to find an appropriate forum, but this was what I came up with. I'm not trying to spam, just letting the community know what's going on.

I have been asked to announce a promotion within the Mid America Aikido Federation (MAAF) of a gentleman many of you know online here, MikeE. (Since I'm a meager assistant, I get to do the dirty work)

Mike Ellefson sensei was promoted on 9/9/05 to the rank of yondan by kancho Randy Bonifay, whose primary instructor was Bill Sosa, kancho of the IAA.

Ellefson sensei has worked very hard to maintain a decent, honest, and loving aikido organization here in Minnesota and Wisconsin, and even harder to maintain an "open door" policy, welcoming students from other dojos. He has abilities that I could only hope for, both on and off the mat. Come and train with him sometime, you will see what I mean.

His efforts to spread aikido as an art and as a benefactor to the community have not gone unnoticed. For those accomplishments, and obvious drive to continue his "work", he received his new rank (and a bevvy of new responsibility).

I hope you don't mind the post, and send him a quick PM or post a note -- this was one of those "tests" where, at the end, you think, "If anyone ever earned that rank, it's that person."

Congratulations!!!

Oh, you might not be trying, you just do.

I'ld say it is fine, BUT

Technically you are telling us that he is a better yondan than any other having ever got this rank or will ever get, what you hopefully never wanted to say.

Nevertheless I take your word that he really haas earned his rank. So have much fun.

Re: Promotion in MAAF

Dirk,

Why do you have to bash an innocent congradulatory post? Achievement should be celebrated and there is nothing wrong in being proud of someone and commenting on it. Your claim that Phil is saying he is a better "yondan than any other having ever got this rank" is ridiculous. There was NO reason for you to tear apart the post. None at all.

In Aiki,
Faith

Re: Promotion in MAAF

I personally don't think you are taking anything away from anyone else's promotion by your statements about him nor do I think you mean it that way. What I do regard as spam are emails from clubs across the world telling me about seminars they are holding. One club that took my email address from the aikiweb dojo database actually had the nerve to tell me not to reply to their email if I was not interested in their seminar. (A spammer that knows what its like to sort through piles of unwanted email). If you want to make your seminar details known to everyone, please post them on the seminar database.

Congratulations to MikeE. I look forward to seeing your seminars posted in the aikiweb seminar list.

Did I bash? I always thought, the only bash, I am doing is using the "Bourne Again SHell" in Linux.

It is not at all an innocent congratulation. It is written as commercial advertising from a commercial organisation.

Oh I've seen, it is meant ironically, so it is not dirty, but it is his duty to do so.

But no objection - it is about aikido in a aikido forum.

The questionned quote, taken literally cannot mean anything else as what I interpreted.

But I take the point that it obviously was not meant for that.

So Phil please accept my apologies for bashing - that is not aikido-style.

And Mike Ellefson congratulations from my side, too. We have never met, but from all I am hearing and reading I am sure, that you deserve the yondan.

Re: Promotion in MAAF

Hi folks,

Just to clarify that it has been fine since the inception of this site for people to post promotion announcements here on AikiWeb. In fact, there's even a "Promotion" topic in the news submission page. I do not see such announcements (this one included) as commercial in nature. I think it is quite appropriate for people to announce promotions within their own organization and to offer congratulations to those individuals. I encourage people to let the AikiWeb community know about important promotions in your and other organizations. Thanks.

Also, Mike, congratulations on your recent promotion.

Victor, I hope you understand that it is against the rules of use of the AikiWeb Dojo Search Engine to use any of the information contained therein for any sort of mass mail compaign, e-mail or postal. I do not support such activities and hope that anyone using the database for such will cease doing so immediately.

Best,

-- Jun

Square Re: Promotion in MAAF

Jun, my apologies, I was bent on finding a forum, didn't think of the news submission.

Mr. Hanss, I fail to see the commercial advertisement in my message (the link was to the news of the promotion), but if you remove your dojo name from your profile, I will immediately edit the original post here when I return to not include the link to avoid any commercialization to be fair and address your concerns.

I'm sorry, I do not accept your apology because it appears false. If I understand your posts, you cannot expect me to believe something from which you back away from in the same and subsequent posts. If I am incorrect in my understanding of your posts, truly, please correct me. I am sorry, too, for the unfortunate misunderstanding of my post.

I happily congratulate anyone for this achievement, because I understand it is not bestowed trivially. And I would hope Mr. Hanss' rhetoric would not discourage other groups from posting the same kind of announcement about their people (in accordance with Jun's rules, naturally!)

*Phil

Thank you. I was concerned about propagating "forum spam" (yuck on regular spam, I'd never do that to people here!), but as Jun mentioned, it does seem to be appropriate here. (Next time, I'll need to use the news form though!)

Mr. Johnson and all other fellow aikidoka,

I am really sorry. My rhetoric was not appropriate.
As we are now at "Mr. Hanss and Mr. Johnson" communication level, I better stop participating in this thread.

CU somewhere else
