Re: Miyabi heavy cotton hakama from Nine Circle
I'm not sure if it's exactly the same model, but I recently purchased the following:
http://www.ninecircles.co.uk/product...D=572&CatID=27
The hakama (to me, at least) has a very nice weight and rigidness to it. I've no doubt that'll vanish after some sweaty ukemi, but straight out of the pack I was very impressed, compared to some others I've seen in the same kind of price range.
Granted, mine's for Iai, but I'm impressed all the same.

Thanks for the information. Opinions on Miyabi products in general?

Re: Miyabi heavy cotton hakama from Nine Circle
Just bought one of these and I'm really impressed. I've bought hakama from lots of different places and this is my favourite so far. Only downside I can see to it is that it boasts of extra long himo but I can't see why you'd need them, so presumably they're intended to be tied in a way I'm not familiar with.

Re: Miyabi heavy cotton hakama from Nine Circle
I've been wearing this model for a while now. I was used to a lighter weight but quickly got used to the heavier feel and now prefer it. They seem really well constructed, so I expect to be in them for a long time to come.

Re: Miyabi heavy cotton hakama from Nine Circle
Further to my initial post in this thread, I ordered one of these hakama recently and it arrived today. It is indeed a similar construction to the one I had previously purchased, although is very heavy (which I think is great). The himo are very long and I can either tie them twice at the front or leave a bit hanging down inside the hakama. I imagine that problem would vanish for someone with a waist a few inches larger than mine. It makes a very nice swooshing sound when doing tai sabaki

Re: Miyabi heavy cotton hakama from Nine Circle
Hopefully my 2 Bu Jin ones will last me a good while longer but... how are the stitched pleats on these? I've never been a fan of them, if it's folded they don't usually come out. I've seen a few people with them over the years and never liked how they look.
My favourite hakama is the indigo dyed one that Bu Jin made for a very limited time from 12oz cotton, relatively smurf proof too!

When did they do the limited indigo run? I had heard others talk about it, but like you said, they just have/had navy recently.

I can't speak for the heavier one just yet, but on the lighter one (which is still a pleasing weight) you can't really tell that the pleats are stitched; they seem to just hold the shape nicely without making the garment too rigid overall. Not really sure if that's what you were asking, though?

Re: Miyabi heavy cotton hakama from Nine Circle
Ashley,
It was years ago, I think the they were available for only a few months, I remember asking Ikeda sensei about them the last time I was at Summer Camp in the Rockies with him so I'm guessing they were available in 2005 or so. He said they couldn't get any more of the material sadly.
David,
I think I've seen an 10oz cotton one that was stitched and up close, it looked pretty awful. I'll have to check one of these out some time. Hopefully they'll have some at some UK seminar this year.

John
I've had a heavy cotton Miyabe hakama for a year. It's still looking good after a lot of hard wear. Unless they have changed, only its pleats that point inwards are stitched and you wouldn't know looking at it except very closely. They do make it easier to fold and to restore after washing.
Mine has shrunk in length; it was only just the right length before washing, even though I followed the measurement instructions when ordering and included shrinkage length, and it still seems to shrink with each wash! This may be just mine though as a mat-mate doesn't have that problem.

Thanks for the update, that sounds a lot better than what I was imagining.

Re: Miyabi heavy cotton hakama from Nine Circle
That's what I think I was trying to articulate in my last post!
They still do only stitch the inner pleats, so it's pretty well hidden. The lighter one I mentioned in my first post in this thread moves and swishes just as gloriously as any other hakama I've seen. The heavy one -- time will have to tell.

Re: Miyabi heavy cotton hakama from Nine Circle
The hakama I'd seen with stitched pleats had the stitching on the outer pleat not the inner... wasn't a good look and didn't hang properly!
