Aikido for charity?

Everyone's probably heard of 5K/10K races for charity, walk-a-thons for charity, dance marathons for charity (fill in the cause - curing diseases, etc).

Has anyone ever heard of a dojo doing some kind of practice event for charity? Could this be remotely viable? Perhaps having practice out at a park or on a campus lawn or some busy public space, having the participants get people to sponsor them (as it works in races and other events), having a table set up off the mat for someone to field questions and accept donations from people who drop by and watch...

I know it might sound weird. But for one thing, if you can do it with jogging and dance, why not aikido? And also, more importatly, as many discussions on this website show, a lot of aikidoka are deeply concerned about making the world a better place through the art. This might be one concrete, practical way of doing just that.

This thread has been moved from the Anonymous forum to the General forum.

Please do not use the Anonymous forum to merely post topics without registering and/or logging in; the Anonymous forum is intended for "delicate" subject matters for which people want to keep their identities from being revealed. I encourage people to keep this in mind before posting on the Anonymous forum as that purpose is not what that forum was created for.

Actually, there is a seminar coming up in Rhode Island that is donating $10 of each attendant's seminar fee to the Boys & Girls Club of Providence.

AAA/AAI did a fall-athon a few years back. Basically people get sponsors to donate a certain amount per fall. So, if someone promises to donate 50 cents per fall and you do 50 falls thats $25.

After everyone got their sponors and donations they held an event with judges and everything. I think you had X number of minutes do to as many breakfalls as you could. You had your own selected nage up their to throw you around.

I think when AAA did it a lot of the dojos where trying to out perform the other dojos in the number of falls (I think the record was 350) they could do in X number of minutesr. I little friendly competion might make it more fun and interesting. (Dojo certificate for the dojo that did the most falls collectively, personal certificate for the person who did the most falls, person who raised the most money, dojo who raised the most money, etc...

I've also heard of a lot of Jujitsu dojos doing this.

Peace

AAA did it, as did their affiliates, to raise money for the new dojo being built that serves as the int'l headquarters for AAI.
