Re: Poll: Have you ever regretted studying aikido?

I only regret not studying sooner.
It took awhile for my evolution to be able to accept it.
Okay, I don't really regret it per say, but it would have been nice to have started younger.
But I didn't.
So it goes.

Re: Poll: Have you ever regretted studying aikido?

Interesting....

The physical stuff - Knees, injuries, - but more than balanced by health benefits...most days.

Bit deeper:

Feeling like I have a different philosophy from 99% of the world now - that sucks. Aiki politics, we all say we hate that...

There are reasons people leave, but I don't think even they regret studying it in general.

Have I ever? Honestly yes, but not often. I love aikido and like some people I love, aikido pisses me off from time to time.

Re: Poll: Have you ever regretted studying aikido?

I was dragged by my father to a dojo to study Aikido. I didn't hate it or anything, but I wasn't really interested in it at that time. That was four years ago and now he can't pull me out of it anymore. hehe

nope, I didn't regret studying aikido

Re: Poll: Have you ever regretted studying aikido?

Lets see.Over the last ten years, I've torn rotator cuffs in both shoulders, dislocated a toe, damaged a nerve in my lower back and displaced small bones in both wrists. So I suppose for an instant while I was writhing in pain on the mat I must have regretted being in aikido. And then the moment passes. and Im still here.

Re: Poll: Have you ever regretted studying aikido?

Not once, even when I tore my hamstring and where it connects to the pelvis (but not off). What I regretted was that I had gotten tangled up in a hakama and would have to take some time away from training. It's the most worthwhile thing I have ever done consistently, and I imagine that I'll train until I physically can't anymore.

No, because I am learning about myself and how I can relate to others. Aikido for me is about becoming better today than who I was yesterday.

Re: Poll: Have you ever regretted studying aikido?

Sometimes have had a loss of faith in aikido and wondered whether my time would have been spent better in other arts or activities, but you only have to start looking into other fighting arts to realise that you can never make yourself unbeatable. Also, it saved me from serious injury/death once so I feel somewhat grateful.

No regrets. Aikido gives me the option of dealing with violence in a more peaceful way. My training has opened my eyes and my mind to things that I might have missed.

Hated it, yes. Regretted it, no.

I only regret sometimes starting at 31 rather than when I was in high school. I could have had more opportunities to train with people that either no longer travel or have passed on.

Re: Poll: Have you ever regretted studying aikido?

I started at 31 and I have no regrets. Some people wish they had started younger, but when you look at the younger folk, many do not stay with it. So, I am glad that I started when I was 31 and was old enough to settle with devoting myself to one true thing.

Re: Poll: Have you ever regretted studying aikido?

I regretted it out of cowardice - "Damn, if this was a judo class I'd be good at it." - you know, 'running home to mama'. When I get angry in aikido I know I'm learning - that's my moment to really look at myself - what am i afraid of?

I really regret not being honest with myself sooner about why I couldn't do the techniques - that my injuries were emotional more than physical - then I could have healed sooner, been a better person..... and be chucking the sandans on their heads now!! yeah!!

Not a bit. More like resent that suddenly there are more interesting social events that happen on Thursday, our night with Sensei, than there are on Saturday night!
Then again, I have been known to turn down paying movie jobs because they conflicted with Sensei's class, particularly during test prep, which we are deep into now...

Re: Poll: Have you ever regretted studying aikido?

The third day after I started, and I was so soar that I couldn't walk. The day I received my shodan, because then I had to wear a dress to class.(it seems like a joke, but my mom won't show my shodan photos to her friends. ) They day I started leading Aikido classes and realized that I really knew nothing. Of course I call these moments of regrets progress and momentary doubts of reason. I don't regret the overall change it had made in my life, and the changes it's still making.
