Tanoshii Dojo

What do ya think? Doesn't this look like a great place for a dojo? I'm going to look at the property tonight. Just wanted to share my dream with you all.

As long as you clean up the cow / horse pies first.

Sensei: Hayaku Ukemi!
Uke: SPLAT!!
Uke's wife: How the heck did you do that! I'm NOT putting that in the wash!!!

Re: Tanoshii Dojo

Well sawdust does make for soft landings...if you don't mind picking splinters out of your tushie!

Seriously though, with a few alterations to make it less barn-ish I think it could be a decent place. If there are stalls inside, you could close a couple of them in for changing rooms and another for an office. Indoor plumbing would be a must. Don't think there would be much of a hay loft from the looks of it, but that would be a great place to store excess gear (e.g. gi for newbies). Once you get going, you might give the outside a coat of slightly more colorful paint, and maybe change the slatted vents out for real windows.....

So yeah, I think it would be do-able! Maybe even easier than some warehouse conversions - if nothing else you'd have a nice place outside to hold weapons practice in nice weather. Might wanna do that in boots though...unless Ron happens to be visiting. Wouldn't want to disappoint his stereotype and all.... :P

Ha! Great name for a dojo!

I'm sure your students will be masters of moo-subi!

Re: Tanoshii Dojo

Ya'all are just too funny! I'm not sure why the horse trailer was parked next to it in that photo. The building is more a "workshop" than a barn. It has a concrete floor with no evidence of moo-subi masters, but they may have all disappeared in the same white ninja smoke that John did. I submitted an offer on the property that was accepted, just waiting on the appraisal to come through. If the property doesn't appraise for what I offered I will probably back out of the deal. Otherwise, Tanoshii Dojo will be open for business on or about June 1st. Everyone is welcome!

Congrats Ricky! You're in the Barstow area, correct? Keep us informed and maybe we can make it up for your opening class or classes. Good luck with the new dojo.

Hi Michael,
Thanks. Yes, I'm in the Barstow area. More specifically, Tanoshii Dojo (if everything goes according to plan) is near Calico Ghost Town in Yermo. Would love to have you drop by and teach a class or two.

Re: Tanoshii Dojo

Ricky,

Thank you for the invitation, but I have no business teaching as I'm only mudansha - but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night.

Congrats! Maybe post in the language forum for the kanji...Jun, Peter, Josh and others will chime in I'm sure!

Best,
Ron (you really don't want kanji from me...no telling what your dojo will be called! )

Hi Ricky,

Congratulations on your new endeavor!

Here are the characters for "tanoshii doujou": 楽しい道場

I'll also attach a quick image I did of the characters in different fonts. Maybe they'll prove helpful for you.

Best,

-- Jun

Thanks so much Jun.
Is this - 楽しい tanoshii?
and this - 道場 doujou?

Re: Tanoshii Dojo

Thanks again Jun.
I take it then that this: 楽しい
would be tanoshii aikido.

You don't have many options for other kanji I would say.
