Re: Lyoto Machida training with Steven Seagal
Hmmm, telling Lyoto Machida not to clinch is like telling Tyson not to use uppercuts.

Hahahaha. 'You need to work on your combinations...'
Brilliant!
Some of it seems like real 'Teaching your grandmother to suck eggs' - but what do we know about MMA training - especially comparitive to Anderson Silva and Lyoto Machida?

Maybe that's the point? I can imagine that MMA has kinda become, technically speaking, rather stagnant. So maybe fighters are looking for something to give them an edge.

Perhaps.
If two of the UFC champions are getting Seagal in to train them - well, who in the MMA world can argue? Silva's regarded as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, and Machida was unbeaten until his last fight.

Re: Lyoto Machida training with Steven Seagal
definately
If they choose to train with Segal they just see something in it,
certainly alot of what I have seen in Segal's aikido from back in th day it seems a lot more direct and tighter than the Hombu style.
it would be interesting to see some well trained fighters like this trying to incorparate some of the principles of aikido.
so thing i have always mantained is that to study an art like aikido well, you must have some exoerience in other 'hard style' martial arts.....
i don;t want to hijack this thread if the last sentence is worth discussing, we can take it on a new thread

Re: Lyoto Machida training with Steven Seagal
I think it is a great idea. With Steven's background in sport fight...wait...
ummm, with the improvements Anderson Silva made after training with Steven...umm...wait.
I got nothing.

It made me think of that annoying uncle who always corners you at family get togethers and won't shut up. You try to be nice and nod and smile, but he just won't go away.

I succumbed to curiosity the other night and watched "A Dangerous Man," starring Steven Seagal, and noticed something.
Then I saw this clip of him with Lyoto Machida and noticed the same thing.
What's with his hair color? Speaking of annoying uncles....remember the one who colors his hair with shoe polish???
Just noticing....

...but then, he went into that fight on the back of some sub-par performances which saw him threatened with expulsion from the UFC.
And his opponent cheated...
And you can't comment on the standard of his performance without taking into account his opponent/s: those who have tried to 'stand up' with him have been made to look like a joke - and when he's previously fought a strong wrestler (two and a half years ago), he got put on his back and beaten up: in the same way we saw against Chael Sonnen.

bah, he was simply getting out classed by a wrestler which has been his supposed weak spot. The performance may have been lack luster, but the win was outstanding.

Re: Lyoto Machida training with Steven Seagal
However; I dont think that Seagal was the factor that made Silva go for that triangle.
But I agree, it was a sweet win but Silva seems to have gotten in to a slump in his career. Can´t be easy to stay focused and motivated when the competition is as weak as it has been before the fight with Sonnen.

Re: Lyoto Machida training with Steven Seagal
Personally be it an Aikido principle or not I think Anderson was a genius in illustrating that all an opponent needs to do is make one mistake and boom he's done. I have seen Fedyor do much the same. Which is the reason both are my favorite fighters. perhaps Anderson was not helped much by the techniques Seagal taught him.. but by the Principle of Irimi which for both Fedyor and Anderson... seems to work perfectly.

Re: Lyoto Machida training with Steven Seagal
I am blown away that Segal was teaching and not the other way around. Silva and Machida are legends. To waste their time with those front kicks and some mongrel Wing Chun seems preposterous. The only thing that my brain could accept was that he was teaching some pretty solid irimi, which I feel would benefit any MMA guy. I guarantee that I will never reach a level as a martial artist where I would not still give a nut to spend a day working with Silva and Machida. To have that day and spend it lecturing them is like putting A-1 steak sauce on the Hope Diamond.

Re: Lyoto Machida training with Steven Seagal
Is it just me or does Machida look fairly irritated and annoyed in the video?

It might be just me, but I think it was just you. In any event, though in this case it is difficult to avoid considering the source, the advice, for the most part, wasn't bad...

Yea, but then again, maybe he did need to work on his combinations. Seagal Sensei had noticed he was not following up with any hand combinations after his kicks, and he was right. He also told him to go after Rampage's knees with kicks as they were weak, and that is exactly what Machida did for whole the 1st round and scored often.
Gee, I don't know, but I think I would take the advice of a 7th Dan who has been practicing a martial art for over forty years, but maybe thats just me.

Hell, I could have gave Machida that advice, even Joe Rogan could have given him that advice.
Forrest Griffen basically wrote the book on beating Rampage.

Re: Lyoto Machida training with Steven Seagal
Seagal is back! Zaftig action star works on Machida's defense
By Steve Cofield
http://sports.yahoo.com/mma/blog/cag...urn=mma-285640
Team Blackhouse must be sold on the teachings of Steve Seagal. Just like he did before Anderson Silva's last fight at UFC 117, the action movie star turned Louisiana deputy, is seen working with another one of the team's fighters.
Seagal, a seventh-degree black belt in Aikido, takes Lyoto Machida through a number of positions. Most of the drills cover counterstriking and defense.
At the 1:23 mark, Seagal talks about how Mauricio "Shogun" Rua overwhelmed Machida with flurries. He tells Machida to move to the side and use the opponent's offense to counter. Machida is already one of the best counterstrikers in MMA. If Seagal can add anything to his game, look out!
Silva told Tatame that people need to stop cracking on Seagal. He learned a lot from the movie star.
Machida lost his UFC light heavyweight title to Shogun back in May. He steps back into the Octagon this weekend against Quinton Jackson.
