Freestyle Jo work
hi
Im a newbie here, but i was wondering if a lot of people did freestyle Jo work while training with the Jo? I have only done it once or twice in the last year but i was also wondering if anyone has any tips on how to figure out what kind of attack (ie, tsuki, shomen, yokomen etc) your opponent does before they do it, i have noticed i can get a rough idea of what they will attack with or where they are attacking but i was wondering if their is any ways to improve this? can any one please help me?
thanks
Ayla

Re: Freestyle Jo work
We train with the jo quite a bit...but I would not feel anywhere near safe doing 'freestyle' with it. And that's after about 8 to 10 years of training. Just wouldn't even consider it in a training environment. I've been whacked enough just doing kata badly.

Howdy!
(Apropos of your post on the sore knees, I think of you everytime I have my class do a lap of the dojo in SHIKO. Got this one old hard-line ex-Marine who refuses to sit out the lap despite pain on the side of the knee...Take care.)

Re: Freestyle Jo work
We, with my wife, we do some time any attack/any defence practice with jo, but in low speed. Of cource, with adrenaline, often we speed up and it becomes difficult to preseve relatif safety of practice.
Very fun stuff.

Look at attacker as whole entity, particularly at his shoulders, his body language will help you to detect even what he thinks
Learn how to impose you rythme, and how to break a rythme.
