Returning to Aikido

Hello all!

My name is Jay Yakura. This fall I returned to Aikido after almost 20 years of being away (with a couple short failing tries to get back). Twenty years ago, for a couple years, I was in a YMCA group that practiced Tomiki Aikido . My new dojo is different, perhaps more spiritual, but still wonderful in different ways.

I think I had forgotten that the best thing about Aikido is the kind of people you meet! It's great to be back!

I can't even begin to imagine the rush of adrenaline coming after an extended absence. Zen, very zen.

Welcome back - I returned to Aikido about 2 1/2 years ago after a 25 year break. At first you might find yourself frustrated because your techniques just do not seem to work the way you remember them to. However, after awhile things will start to fall in place and click the way you remember them. Also, you may find that you do not bounce up off the mat as crisply as you did when you were 20 years younger - just take it easy and adjust your effort accordingly.

Good Luck

Re: Returning to Aikido

It is indeed a wonderful thing that we find ourselves returning, and that it is there to return to. Good luck, I hope you find a good fit with aikido and your every day life.

In gassho,
Mark
