I needed a break

About 10 months ago I decided to leave my dojo (on good terms) and start up classes at a local YMCA. For various reasons it did not work out and by the time I decided to give up the program at the YMCA I no longer had any passion for aikido. The fact that I didn't care to train any more really bothered me so I decided to just take one month off and then I would return to my old dojo. That month passed and I still had no desire to train and was beginning to think I would never return. I decided I would take one more month, but thinking it would turn into several months off, but the second month off was a little different because I found myself thinking more and more about aikido. By the time the month was over I knew it was time to get back on the mat. Last night I returned to the mat for the first time in a couple months and loved every minute of it.

So there really isn't anything to debate about my post and maybe it doesn't even belong in a forum but I really just wanted to share my thoughts. I realize that everyone's path is different but I once thought I would never take time off of aikido but now realize that taking that time off may be what keeps me in it for the long run. So if you are struggling with aikido maybe taking a step away will help....just don't step so far away you never return.

Re: I needed a break

Hi Brian,
Thanks for sharing that! I can relate a bit to what you shared. I'm still trying to get organized enough just to train semi-regularly again, but I agree sometimes it takes a step back in order to make a renewed/refreshed approach to training. My personal problem has been that I have felt so torn between "shoulds." "I should train if I want to be any good at it," or, "I should save the gas money and focus on school/writing/being a dad/etc." Balancing priorities can be tough stuff...and some times you have to drop a thing or two in order to get a better grip on them.
Take care,
Matt

It's futile to berate yourself for not feeling something that you think you should feel. Looks like letting the feeling come around on its own worked for you.

Re: I needed a break

You stepped back, got a better perspective, made a decision, and jumped back in. That process is exactly what each of us needs to do sometimes. Glad you found the jazz again...
