Doka of the Day

" Even the most powerful human being
Has a limited sphere of strength.
Draw him outside of that sphere
And into your own, and his strength will dissipate."

- Morihei Ueshiba

How does this relate to keeping ma ai (distance) and kuzushi (taking your opponet's balance)?

Imho it means that the best way to take an opponent's balance may be by taking his body/limbs in a direction or place that is increasingly far away from his own centre while keeping that limb increasingly near to your own centre, making your position/posture/technique increasingly stronger while making his increasingly weaker.

Or I may just be full of it.

Agreeing with Larry, and just for another way of looking at this quote (for curiosity's sake): One could read this as adopting a strategy that places an opponent outside of his tactical familiarity. :-)

Re: Doka of the Day

I like the idea that when someone attacks, there is a point when that attack reaches its maximum strength. Hardi ki is about that direct breaking force. With soft ki you move around that force and dissapate it, redirect it, or whatever you'd like to call it.

Thats my seven cents.

To speak ill of anything is against the nature of Aikido

Would the "limited sphere of strength" be the area around your body that you can move within without over extending and losing your balance? When you are over extended you are beyong the point of maximum strength. The strategy would be to get your attacker to over extend by your movement (response to the attack) and guide the attacker to your center.
