Dueling With O-sensei expanded edition
I'm working my way through Ellis Amdur's massively revised and expanded 2nd edition of Dueling With O-sensei and wondering if anyone else is reading it with as much enjoyment as I. I just finished the chapter "Aiki-A State Of The Union." Amdur expresses one of the most interesting and satisfying explanations of the term 合気 I have seen. There is much here for anyone, but especially for aikidoka.
I like his translation of aiki as "compassion" and love that he adds "It is an illusion that one that one can acheive a state of aikido without the acquisition of skillful means."

Re: Dueling With O-sensei expanded edition
I just finished that chapter two days ago and also fell in love with "it is an illusion that one can achieve a state of aikido without the acquisition of skillful means".
Yesterday evening a student of mine approached me with a question. He had attended a seminar from another group and was now wondering: "How many esoteric people are there in aikido?".
But as for Ellis' book - I am still reading it (few pages left) and I also enjoyed most of it. I came across lots of books repeating streamlined mainstream ideas over and over again. Ellis seems not that mainstream to me; I like the very personal approach to the topics.

Re: Dueling With O-sensei expanded edition
I enjoyed Ellis' revised edition immensely. Budo Gonzo Journalism :-) He is a great writer and his take on things is very well thought out.
I need to re-read it, because there is so much to absorb.
I'm looking forward to working my way through it again!

Ethan

Re: Dueling With O-sensei expanded edition
From all the above remarks, it seems like an interesting book to read. Unfortunately, it seems unavailable in the moment in amazon.com and bookdepository.com. Is there another website to purchase it?

Re: Dueling With O-sensei expanded edition
You can also purchase the book at Mugendo Budo:
http://www.budogu.com/SearchResults....x=0&Search.y=0
As well as Old School
http://www.budogu.com/SearchResults....=10&Search.y=6
Thank you, everyone, for the kind words. I am certainly happy to answer any questions you might have about details of the books (with the exception of if I've not mentioned the name of someone I allude to in the text, I won't answer it elsewhere).

Very much so. I'm due for a second read. I spent months just thinking how best to word a review of the book that could do it at least a little justice.
My favourite anecdote is chapter 21. I've had the thought to get it translated into Japanese so I can tell it the next time we have a dojo no(mi)-kai and have to make a speech.

Naturally having something useful to say is like natural responses during training: It takes much practice.

Re: Dueling With O-sensei expanded edition
*Concerning Chapter 7: Atemi: Striking to the Heart of the Matter , how many of you have tried the approach? I found out that Shoken zuki from Uechi ryu http://www.nantanreikan.ca/Glossary/...uki/shoken.jpg would have an interesting application in this type of training.

Re: Dueling With O-sensei expanded edition
An interesting perspective on the Nakano spy school were O'Sensei was in instructor for a brief time:
" There was a spy school that taught an extraordinary degree of liberalism and generosity and non-xenophobia. The idea being that the Japanese would bring freedom to the peoples of Asia — of course, it turned out to be exactly the opposite after Pearl Harbor. But this different tradition was preserved by the Nakano Spy School...", in the last paragraph.
