Excerpt from the article:-

It's not just fighting techniques," says Tanya Gordon, a social worker with the Canadian Mental Health Association.
"It's observational skills as well - where to park your car, where to stand when you are getting on the elevator and just ways to avoid getting into a potentially dangerous situation."

Hey, this is so familiar. After reading this article, it just hit me; I have been sub-consciously doing this for years. In my everyday life, I tried to be in the crowd, someone who will not stand out too outstandingly.

Re: Article: Hospital Self Defense
That's very true. Even though we're not highly ranking in violence in care facilities, there has just been a strike of half a day in one hospital after a doctor was attacked in the E.R.
I think it's a really good idea to have workers in places like hospitals be able to defend themselves while useing techniques that will not hurt the attacker (who might also be on medication and not in total control of their action).
Something to think about as I'm soon starting a job in hospital environment!
Good Article, thanks for sharing it

One of my students works in a psychiatric hospital. He often has to apply his training at work.

I recall using ikkyo once or twice to help restrain wacked out people until we could get them tied up.

Re: Article: Hospital Self Defense
If any of you are interested in Blok Sensei's class, here are two web sites related to him:
The first one is for On Guard (the On Guard classes that were mentioned in the article).
The second one is for his Chudokan Aikido Dojo.
Hope this will be helpful!

Re: Article: Hospital Self Defense
Thanks for the plug Mr. Lavictoire. We missed you at the seminar up in Windsor last weekend! It was a great time. I hope everything is going well for you all up North.
Anyways, its interesting how this article has gotten around. The On Guard organization that Matthieu mentioned does a lot of hospital work in Mich. with just such instances. Blok Sensei has a background working at a mental institution as well. One interesting part about that was that the patients knew that he was 'into' martial arts so they would reguarly hide around corners and try to get him with shanks, spoons, forks, whatever. They made sort of a game out of it. Aikido is good to apply, as Blok Sensei calls it in the On Guard version of techniques, a "benevolent dictatorship."

If you arrest a mime, do you have tell him he has the right to remain silent?
