Calligraphy
I'm interested in getting some Aikido maxims to plaace in my house. Does anyone know of a good place where I could order Calligraphy from? I noticed Bujin had some over there, but I was wondering what other options were open (its a bit pricy, but its all hand done over there).
Thanks!

Re: Calligraphy
Try budostuff.com or seibukan-aiki.com or bujindesign.com for custom and other good quality work. Ikeda Sensei (Bujin) also sells here on the AikiWeb site. Another good resource if you're looking to save some cash, and don't really care if the brushwork is that of an Aikido person, is always eBay. Just do a search using "aikido" or "calligraphy" and scroll around.

Re: Calligraphy
How do you mean "hand done"? Isn't that what "calligraphy" is?

Re: Calligraphy
Actually, no. There are a lot of computer-generated pieces and reproductions out there (such as those of O'Sensei's) and a lot of stuff made up in advance that is not "custom" work.

That's hysterical, Lynn. Imagine giving an unsuspecting friend a tastefully decorated wall hanging to be displayed proudly in his living room, with the Kanji reading "I'm a Boob..." or some such.

http://www.shambhala.com/html/zenart/index.cfm has some nice things if you like zen, as opposed to shinto. I have an Enso myself. Scroll down to 152 on the Zen Circles of Enlightenment page.

Re: Calligraphy
I've had great luck ordering some custom pieces from Budo Video. The ones I've ordered were approximately 10 X 12 inches and we framed and matted them at home for gifts.

On this note, I have "Ban Yu Ai Go" tattooed on my back, and whenever anyone asks what it means I make up something crazy on the spot like "Vegetable Lo Mein" (most can't tell the difference between chinese and japanese kanji) or "Learn Japanese"... the responses are awesome... my favorite so far has been "If you can read this, pick me up off the floor...", the look on the guys face was priceless.

Re: Calligraphy
If you can get in contact with him, Walther Von Krenner Sensei is an amazing calligrapher. When he paints a circle, it is, for all intent and purpose, perfect. So perfect that (i've heard) at one point he was accused of using machines to do the circles for him. Some of his work can be purchased on bugei trading companie's website. http://www.bugei.com/subcategory_61.htm but if you could i would try to contact him personaly and make a personalized order. (if he does that kind of thing)
