Mirror of the past verses today

The more I read the forums, the more I find that real advice is find out for yourself.

I guess you can listen to people about what you look like, what your reflection looks like verses actually looking in the mirror and seeing for yourself what it is?

Sometimes we can do something we think is one way in our minds, as interpreted by our senses, then when we see the film or video it looks nothing like what we thought it would be?

Point being ...

Do you learn from watching a film or video of your Aikido practice?

Does it, in fact, drive home many of the mistakes or improper movements you thought you had mastered?

What changes would you make to have the form and effectiveness you seek from Aikido practice?

This is something Y. Yamada brings up in one of his videos, and having gone to a seminar today with Yamada sensei, it came to mind.

I'm not sure what you were trying to say in the rest of the post. But it appears that the above statement, or what I interpret it to mean, sums things up. Usually the best answers are those you find yourself (or something along those lines).

Seek guidance from those you respect, but remember to find your own solutions and be responsible for your own actions.

"Do you learn from watching a film or video of your Aikido practice?"

I would like to try that. I think it might be very helpful.

I think the sense of sight is a little overrated. Try using a blindfold and feel your way through your techniques. If it feels right it probably is.

Even better, try training with one of our guys, Dougie. He practices at two Dojo's and does well. He's blind and has never seen Aikido. Makes me feel humble to train with him.
Have fun.
