Interesting poll. In our Dojo/association the social side is very important and helps to keep the members together. It also helps when members tell their friends that it's a fun place to go, not just for the training side.

Have fun

It is not for everyone that they should turn their world upside-down and socialise with the dojo. That may be too much for some, with family, friends outside of Aiki, work, etc.

It can be great, the social side of Aikido, but I have never thought less of anyone who did not socialise. That said, we, my group from my Master, always talked about "family", and that has aways felt so. It is a very comfortable environment.

So, as the Polish say:

"Jako Tako!"

My sensie and I tend to socialize alot in the summer time for the simple reason we are neighbors at the beach. I fact thats how I started Aikido. I don't beleive it is important to foster a social life with any one in the Dojo unless you have for one reason or other clicked as friends with some or all in the dojo.

aikido is about harmony, guys. How can you maintain harmony if you refuse to know people besides you or your society. It's very important to know people outside the dojo because who knows you can learn something new from them, or at least we can exchange opinion. In fact I think it's important to socialize with people from other arts as well.

Not being an altruist, I've voted important for a very simple reason, aikido has been a very easy way to not be so isolated when in a new city for the first time. You can walk into most dojos and find yourself interacting with a new group of people who have at least something in common with you. As I'm effectively using them for my own ends, it seems only polite to at least try and get to know them and get on with them.

In addition, some of the more contentious threads have revolved around personal interaction, sensei's manners off the mat etc. If you're not willing to get to know them a little outside the dojo, how can you come to any real conclusions on whether they are the one to teach you best?

This all sounds religious.
