Aikido at Work

Does anyone do any training/exercises while at work?

I work for a very wellness conscience company and they encourage stretching and exercise every 20 minutes. Been thinking of some Aiki taiso variations that would be simple to do in a small office.

Re: Aikido at Work

I don't do any formal or group stretching while at work, but I do the various aiki taiso wrist stretches fairly often throughout the day (I don't need to get out of my chair to do those, and can even do them when I'm stuck sitting in a meeting or whatnot). I occasionally do other stretches on an "as-needed" basis.

I even get coworkers occasionally asking if I know stretching exercises for whatever body part happens to be ailing them. So... I figure I must be doing something right!

If you are going to be leading stretching exercises, keep it to the simple stuff that any stiff, out-of-shape person can do even in their present state. I would also throw in the basic breathing exercises.

The wrist stretches. They're good if you type all day.

Re: Aikido at Work

Thanks for the replies. In addition to the wrist exercises I have also found the sayu and ushiro tori waza easy to do in an office environment. Although coworkers do look at me funny sometimes.

Re: Aikido at Work

i just got done doing all our ki exercises at work. Of course, with no coworkers I don't have to worry about weird looks. I do, however, have to be careful of the lights when I do jo practice inside.

Re: Aikido at Work

Since December, I've added wrist stretches in my pre-stretch warmup before every yoga class I take. The wrist stretches really help prepare the joints in the hands and wrists for the rigors of some of the yoga poses.

Re: Aikido at Work

Thanks everyone. Got a new office room mate today so my exercises are pretty much limited to wrist stretches and mental/visual training

Re: Aikido at Work

Oh thank goodness I am not the only Aikido geek to practice at work: keeping good posture as I walk around, try to notice and remove tension from the body, yes mental and visual training, asking coworkers to grab my wrist or push on my body, stretching on long elevator rides, moving from center/keeping one point (whatever that means), walking and doing kokyu-dosa (aiki-age) to the air

Re: Aikido at Work

Hahaha thanks Hung. I remembered another one today. Practice keeping my center/hara and after opening a door continue to push it open with one finger while walking 'through' the doorway. Use my ki to direct the door and tell it where to go.

Yes, geek would be the applicable term here

Re: Aikido at Work

Noticed the other day that oftentimes coworkers have mastered the ability to tenkan away from and redirect work assignments.
