Re: Finding a live practice for Aikido.
I think 'alive' practive is good. What I discovered, through doing various arts, was that when trying to do Aikido the waza from other arts just appeared, and vice versa. So, for me anyway, the problem is how to do only Aikido when in the Aikido dojo in the 'alive' situation. What I think you will find is that those waza you develop under stress are the ones that become your own. So, if someone puts me under stress in an Aikido situation I might find my self doing a Judo waza from time to time as Judo waza are typically developed under a great deal of stress. And so on and so forth vis-a-vis Wing Chun/Jujutsu in my case. It also is sometimes the case that a certain waza from a differtent art better matches the situation in the moment. But even so - one can still do such in an aiki context, so I like to think. As an aside, what has always baffled me is why most Aikidoka think they are not allowed to use Judo throws or tripping people up from time to time. To me it is more about 'territory' than sensibility. I think we can do whatever we are capable of if it is done with an Aikido kind of spirit.
PS 'Alive' to me doesn't mean full on gung-ho fighting. It just means getting a couple of steps beyond kata. Light practice is best because with light practice you can learn. Full on - and it is just more of a test of what you know. Does that even make sense ...
