Need help with breakfalls...

Hi, I'm new to aikido, and so far I've been enjoying it. The only thing is, I've been having trouble with my breakfalls. I get confused aduring my roll, and when I land, I tend to end up in a weird position. You guys got any tips/suggestions?

Re: Need help with breakfalls...

Hmmmmm, I cant really say anything with out seeing your ukemi...mayby you should talk to your sensei(s) i think they are the only ones that can really help you as they are the ones who can see what you are doing different. You say you are new to aikido? Dont worry i think it will develop in time. Almost everyone gets it eventually. Another thing is dont hink about rolling when you roll, if you have to think, think about hitting the ceailing with your BACK leg....
Not much to go on but i hope it helps a little.

Forward Roll Clips

That's about the only video clip I could find for any Ukemiwaza. It has the forward roll on it.

On the backward roll: Concentrate on going slowly at first. Your fingers, toes, and nose should all be pointing in the same direction, fall backward on your hmmm, thenlet it naturally take you over the same shoulder everything is pointing at.

On forward rolls, just watch the video clips and start from a low position, and work your way up. You should feel nothing or hear nothing out of the ordinary when doing the rolls. I know sounds funny, but once you get it down, you'll understand what I mean.

On breakfalls, I can only give the advice of starting out low again. Squatting, place the right hand on the left shoulder (deltoid), at the same time place the right leg toward the left side and fall. When falling take the right hand and slap the ground simultaneously with your body as you land. You want the arm placement to be at about a 45' angle from your head and your legs. If that hand gets too far out, you have the chance of landing wrong and dislocating your shoulder. If it's too far toward your leg, you have the chance of offbalancing your body and causing yourself to land wrong.

Switch and repeat on the other side. Once you get this down, then do it from standing. ZThe only difference is that you will be throwing your leg to the direction while you jump, instead of being in the position already.

Just practice is all I can say. Good luck.

These are very basic ways of learning and how I teach beginners. Once you learn them, you can do a lot of different practice drills.

Anyways- again good luck.
