Tokugi Hirata Sensei
Good evening!
I was trying to research a Hirata Sensei and I see there seem to be at least two that come from Shih Shin toitsu Aikido and Tohei Sensei.
I was looking for background on Tokugi Hirata Sensei.
Sound familiar with anyone?
Thanks in advance,
James

Re: Tokugi Hirata Sensei
He established his school on the west coast, San Diego or something. He's a fifth dan, student of Tohei. Was never a shihan as far as I know. Not sure what you want out of it other than that.
You're from San Diego.. his dojo should still be around. If it is its in the CAA. I think the current dojo head out ranks him though. :/

Re: Tokugi Hirata Sensei
Thank you Red!
I have since been able to locate my old teacher and even got him out of retirement to teach us Aikido again. He said that Tokuji Hirata was a 7th dan and he listed Ben Sekishiro Sensei also (5th dan) in his lineage.
I am very happy to have him teaching again, a couple of us students were at his house visiting and he had pictures on his wall from the 60's, the first Doshu Kisshomaru Ueshiba was junior to him back then! LOL
Our teacher apparently came through the ranks initially with Frank Doran Sensei also. Great history!

Re: Tokugi Hirata Sensei
Very glad that you were able to attain information regarding Hirata Sensei, a true Aikido pioneer in California Aikido.
Just a note to clarify. Doshu Kisshomaru Ueshiba, known as Waka Sensei at that time in history, was never junior to anyone in Aikido, here in the United States, or anywhere else internationally. He became the second Doshu upon the death of his father, the Founder of Aikido.
The Iemoto system of succession has the current Doshu in direct lineage from his father, and of his grandfather, O'Sensei. As such, they are considered beyond any ranking.
Respect given, is respect received.

My apologies, I did not convey what I meant very well. I just thought it was cool that my teacher was in the same class with the young Doshu.
Love this site-
