AikiWeb Raffle for Mary Heiny Sensei

Hi everyone,

It was brought to my attention that a group of aikido practitioners is soliciting support for Mary Heiny sensei to help her have hip surgery on her ailing hip. More information on this can be found in this thread:

http://www.aikiweb.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14165

Back in 2002, we held a raffle here on AikiWeb to help support an aikido practitioner who had suffered a brain aneurysm and we were able to raise $800. Here is the thread on that raffle: here

I would like to hold a similar raffle for Mary Heiny sensei's fund. I am thinking of following the format of the last raffle wherein we collect commitments from people to donate an aikido related item or service to the raffle, we sell raffle tickets (with each ticket being a chance to win something), we hold the raffle, then each person who donated the item sends the item to the winner of that item.

So, at this time, I would like to know if people here would be willing to donate something for the raffle. If so, please let me know in this thread or let me know by sending me a message.

So, if people could look for something they can donate and/or ask your instructor and dojo members if they'd be willing to donate something, I would greatly appreciate it. Please respond by Friday, April 11th with your commitment so that we can hold the raffle in April.

Thank you for your consideration, everyone!

Best regards,

-- Jun

Re: AikiWeb Raffle for Mary Heiny Sensei

It's a great idea, Jun. Unfortunately, I don't have anything that would be worth raffling away. Just some ordinary books that aren't collector's editions. Maybe we can talk Ellis Amdur into raffling off a copy of his upcoming book?

Re: AikiWeb Raffle for Mary Heiny Sensei

I will offer for the raffle a first-edition (1968) of "This is Aikido" by Koichi Tohei, including the original cardboard cover, all in excellent (almost new) condition.

And I wish her the best of luck. Bad hips are the nearest thing to being a pain in the butt.

Regards,

Re: AikiWeb Raffle for Mary Heiny Sensei

Sounds like a wonderful idea. Count me in for the following ...

1. A free month training at our dojo in Norfolk, Va

2. One white 8.5oz martial arts uniform (size 000 - 7), including shipping anywhere in continental U.S.
(karate style, not aiki/judo/woven, but a decent weight)

Wish I had more to offer...

Shannon

Re: AikiWeb Raffle for Mary Heiny Sensei

Very noble cause, Jun. I've got a few things around here I can toss in the hopper:

1) Complete 6-volume set of Ken Ota's Aikido DVD's (new, still in the wrappers)

2) New copy of "Aikido: The Complete Basic Techniques" by Gozo and Yasuhisa Shioda

3) Fine+ copy of "Takemusu Aikido, Volume 1" by Morihiro Saito (the hard-to-find 1st Edition)

4) A handmade pen/pencil set in presentation box, using wood of the buyer's choosing

Hope this helps... Everybody, please give what you can...

Re: AikiWeb Raffle for Mary Heiny Sensei

Hi everyone,

Just got back from keiko to see all of these wonderful donations -- thank you all so much! I think this is going to become another wonderful raffle. I appreciate all of your generosity and thoughtfulness.

I'm hoping to make a quick flyer to post in dojo and such about this raffle as well as a pointer to the friendsofmaryheiny.org site. I'll let everyone know when I have it ready.

Let's see what other donations we can have committed to this raffle!

Best regards,

I know shipping offshore can be a bit of a pain, but how about an option for sending overseas - free shipping in the continental US, offshore (or Canuck or Mexican) shipping charged to raffle winner? Haven't met Mary Heiny but have heard great things about her.

I would rather keep all expenses be the sole responsibility of the person donating the item. So, I would expect that anyone donating would be OK with shipping the item to anywhere in the world.

If anyone who is donating items would rather not have the possibility of incurring expenses to ship their items overseas, please let me know.

Thanks,

Hmmm ... I hadn't thought enough about overseas. There are quite a few laws regarding knifes overseas. I don't think the Spyderco knife will be legal everywhere, like it is in the U.S. Probably be best to drop that from the list, then.

Re: AikiWeb Raffle for Mary Heiny Sensei

Sorry, Jun.

Overseas shipping can be a hassle. Customs forms and uncertain duties add to greatly increased shipping costs. This wouldn't work for us.

I guess count me out for the overseas shipping. I'll add the Spyderco knife back in.

Re: AikiWeb Raffle for Mary Heiny Sensei

Hi Aviv, Mark,

One thought I had, then, is to only award "will ship to US only" items to people who live in the US. Although it'll add a bit of complexity for myself when I draw the names for each prize, I'll do what I can do.

So, folks, when you put in an item for donation, please let me know if you will only be sending out the item to US addresses. Otherwise, if I don't hear from you, I will assume that you don't mind shipping your item overseas.

Also, unless an item is part of a set, I will be counting each donation as separate items which may be won by different individuals...

Thanks,

-- Jun

I have received donation commitments from the following folks for the following items:Thanks, Dante, Mark, and Jake (from BudoVideos.com)!

Does anyone else here have anything you can commit to contributing to this AikiWeb raffle to benefit Mary Heiny sensei's upcoming hip surgery? You can find more details in the first post of this very thread.

Re: AikiWeb Raffle for Mary Heiny Sensei

Hi everyone,

I have just created a page to hold all of the information on the raffle:

http://www.aikiweb.com/raffle/

It includes the list of donation commitments. I will keep updating that page (as well as this and other pertinent threads).

Please link the above URL from your websites to let folks know of the raffle!

Best,
