Question Uchi-Deshi Programs

Hi all, just wondering if you can become a Uchi-Deshi at the Aikikai Hombu Dojo? What are the possibilities of becoming one and dedicating your life to the art of Aikido?

Hopeful student,

Todd.

Re: Uchi-Deshi Programs

Hi Todd,

Officially, there are no uchi-deshi at Honbu and haven`t been since after WW 2. There is a program to become shidoin/shihan, but as far as I know, no non-Japanese have participated since the founder died. You could come over, get a job and train a lot, though.

Re: Uchi-Deshi Programs

Thats sounds ok I guess. Are you training there now? I will be coming to japan for a 3-week holiday in November and I'm wanting to visit the Honbu Dojo and do a little bit of training.

Will I be allowed? I know I have to pay to train and thats no problem, just wanting to know if I can train.

Thank you!

Re: Uchi-Deshi Programs

you can register at Hombu dojo and pay a monthly fee, see here for more details (click on Guide)

http://www.aikikai.or.jp/Eng/index.htm

My association in the UK is not affiliated with the Aikikai, nor did I have an introductory letter. I never had a problem registering, although I do speak Japanese which helped .

They do have a daily visitor fee, but you may find that registering is cheaper than paying the daily fee, depending upon how many days you intend to train there.

If you are already registered with the Aikikai, take your membership card (and yudansha book if you have one) with you, it will probably smooth the path.

Regards

Bryan

A difficult problem is easily solved by asking yourself the question, "Just how would the Lone Ranger handle this?"
